Oprah gives away all those new cars on her anniversary show. I understand she makes 60M per year, and think well, she can afford to do that. Then on the news,,,I hear that the Pontiac division "donated" all those cars to give away.

Yeah, the radio report I heard said Pontiac donated them.

I bet the people who got them really don't care who donated them!

Actually, she makes ALOT more then that. She makes about $50M per year just off the Dr. Phil show (a spinoff from him being on her show for 3+ years).

Her take of Harpo (her company) is roughly 1 billion.....

Right Randy, but the point is that it was painted as if Oprah gave them away,,,,,which with her net worth I'm sure wouldn't have made a dent. Another fraud.

Yes, heard the same thing. At first, I thought she may have given them away as she does that a lot on her show. Cheap advertising for Pontiac...........

...have to admit, I didn't know Oprah was still on TV at all....it must be on when I take my afternoon nap

....CJ nailed it....it is a cheap promo for Pontiac compared to just buying air time.....plus it builds goodwill for their product....

Now....if Oprah really wants to do something...I hope she is also covering the "gift tax" that each person will have to claim. From what I read in the paper, the people in the audience were somehow "hand picked" because they really needed a new car. But the question is, no matter who donated the cars....WHO will help some of these people cover the cost of the taxes involved? I don't think some of them could afford a few thousand dollars in taxes...that's why they needed a new car already. Wonder if Oprah will cover this for them? But then I guess that would be subject to gift tax also...an endless cycle...

Also for what it's worth...the cars were all new Pontiac G6 vehicles...a new car to replace the Grand Am...so yeah...really good marketing on Pontiac's part for some free press out of the deal......

But in the end...I'd take a new car if someone wants to give it to me too!!!!

From what I read the other day, taxes, gift taxes, registration and licensing fees where all to be picked up by Pontiac too.

These folks got them free and clear.

pontiac should be out of business like olds, and buick next.
way to many models out there, and they all just keep on making more, instead of improving on the ones they already produce.american job security, and they cant sell the ones they have.question----if we added up all the cars out there, including all the new unsold used unsold and all the registered ones world wide hom many cars are in this world, any guesses.

From what I remember in tax law class, there was a case where a company paid the income tax for one of its employees. IRS was trying to argue that the employee (or the company, basically anyone) should pay the gift tax on the payment of the income taxes, but it was decided that because of the "endless cycle" problem, the IRS is capped at only collecting to a certain level. (Not sure where exactly it stops but it is either at the post - gift tax level (only pay the gift tax on the first gift) or pre - gift tax level (no gift tax).

This is a personal opinion and should not be taken as legal advice in any way whatsoever. If you have any tax questions, you should consult a qualified tax attorney.

You're kidding, right?? If I had been in that audience and received one of the cars, I would not have kept it. I would have paid the taxes (if I had to) and given it to my son and daughter-in-law who need a new car. I have more cars than I can park in my garage now and don't need one......especially a Pontiac!

Yeah, but you have a Pizzeria! Besides, a Prowler isn't too practical when you have two kids and a dog to haul around! They'll have the Prowlers some day.....
