Did you hear about the Genesis probe that spent years flying through space and collecting samples of the solar wind, the stream of particles that emanates from the sun? This $264 million dollar space probe crashed when "helicopter crews, including a Hollywood stunt pilot, were to spot the capsule and latch onto it with a long hook." Point #1: No space mission should involve a Hollywood stunt pilot, a helicopter, and a long hook. Point #2: The probe's parachute didn't deploy. $264 million bucks and the parachute didn't work. I'm a strong advocate of space exploration, manned and unmanned, but I can understand why neither politicians nor the public seem interested in space travel when you have missions that cost a fortune but are plagued by inexcusable screw-ups like this.

Updated 11 September 2004, 13.28 Particles have been found safe inside the crashed Genesis space capsule, say scientists at Nasa. The probe was on a three year mission to capture particles of solar wind to try to discover how the sun formed. Genesis fell to Earth on Wednesday after a battery failure meant its parachute didn't open, and experts were worried all their work was ruined. Physicist Roger Wiens said : "We should be able to meet many, if not all, of our primary science goals. Nasa hope the atoms on Genesis will tell them how the Sun and all the planets formed out of huge cloud of dust 4.5 billion years ago.

What's the value of spending all those tax dollars on this space mission?

Al, not sure what the value is other then tring to figure out some real questions about how the solar system formed. Does it matter? I don't know, but the first space missions brought us Tang.

I've been selected to lead a new space expedition funded by Bill Gates and MicroSoft's money. We are planning a space trip to the SUN. Now I know many of you are saying: "The Sun,,,is he crazy, they will burn up during any approach" I figured out how to do,,,,we are going to land during the night! Saving those tax dollars,,,AC
