I grew up with the transformation from pinball to video games. I remember when my home got an Atari system for Christmas. The first games were PING PONG and COMBAT TANKS. Soon to follow were SPACE INVADERS, PACMAN, many different RACE CAR games. I think my favorites at the time were from ACTIVISION. I remember one called "FREEWAY". The object was to get the chicken across the road.

In the video game arcade rooms, my favorites were Hogan's Alley, Ikari Warriors, and there were several others, but I forgot the names of most of them.

If I were to buy a home game system today, what should I get and why?

But I can't shoot anybody or race anybody on a pool table...

That'll have to wait until I get a bigger house. A townhouse is not exactly the place for a pool table.

Damon,
same here - I grew up with ATARI and all the wonderful Arcade games that still fascinate me until this very day !

I just can't get into those new games, Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube etc........guess what I did ??

I got me a SuperNintendo system and all the old Arcade games like Tetris, Space Invaders, Dig Dug, Pac man etc. etc. and having a blast playing them on the Big screen TV !!

Try it - you won't regret it !!

Foosball wouldn't work... I'm home alone. And I'd have diffculty making room even for that. I have a dart board. I play darts sometimes, but usually only if I have guests.

I've gone past addiction. I play a few PC games sometimes, but I haven't been "addicted" to any games in several years.

I'm not even sure, yet, that I want a game system, hence the question.... What should I get and why?

I still have the original pong game. I haven't played that in ages.
I also have a pool table, but I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've played on it over the past 5 years. I used to have some good parties and played it alot more then. Its a little tiresome playing with yourself all the time. (yea, go ahead... lemme have it...)

We currently have a PS2 for the boys but they are always telling us how much better the XBOX games are. I guess the multiplayer options are better on the XBOX.

Rent a couple of different ones and see which one you like better.

I'd recommend an Xbox because you can mod it and "backup" games to the hard drive. I'm thinking of putting mine in the Prowler. I already have the TV in the dash, so all I'll need is a wireless controller.

I'm from the same era and I still love the original games I played on my Atari and TI99/4A. These days you can buy what are basically joysticks that plug directly into your TV that have many of your favorite old games from Atari, Activision and Namco. You can read about them at JakksTVGames.com . I have All of them with the exception of the Atari Paddle, and that's only because I hadn't seen that one until just now. It's a hoot to play the old games like PacMan, Galaga and Galaxian!

Damon.....how hilarious!! A number of years ago, we were moving from Salt Lake City back to Denver. We were moving three days before Christmas, so we really weren't going to have much of a Christmas Day celebration (heck, I couldn't even find my Christmas tree!). We gave our two young sons their Christmas present early and it was an Atari game. Eventually, we had a ton of the games and I remember well the Freeway game (I used to play Atari with the boys all the time). It was hilarious. The really scary thing is we still have the Atari and ALL the games with it!

My grandsons have quite a few different systems, but I think the one they like the best is the XBox.

If you're a fan of the classic arcade games, they have them for the PlayStation 2 with a couple different discs that each have 10+ games on them.

One night we were at a friends (a VERY competitive friend) house playing the board game "Risk" and we conspired ahead of time to gang up on him and less than 30 minuets into the gang he was DONE. He left the room we were in and challenged my son at Atari ... my son beat him every time so without a goodnight or anything he went to bed.
