thru June, only 5442 copies of the retro truck have been sold.....roughly 1/3 what GM had planned on producing.......the bad news...there is a 6 month supply in inventory.....

...I knew EVERYWHERE I went, dealers have these things all over the lot, even sitting outside 24 hours a day.....magazines state, underpowered, overpriced as reasons for the failure....maybe retro is not a big deal these days....the T-Bird was also a failure of sorts....maybe people are just tired of being gouged pricewise on the next "surefire" collector vehicle by the dealers....don't know what the reason is but the SSR is selling very poorly.....look for BIG rebates, maybe more power, or probably the end ....

...personally, I kinda liked them....figure I will wait and buy the first one I can get for $30K....it may be sooner than you think....dealer told me not to make an offer in jest, I might be surprised what they would let it go for....

I also very much like the looks of the SSR. The Prowler got beat up for not having a V8 but its performance was still acceptable. The SSR has a V8 but is much slower than the Prowler. The Prowler had a new chassis to go with the original styling. The SSR is sitting on a SUV chassis. Under powered and heavy, and already built to accept a V8 GM had no excuse for not putting a more powerful motor in it from the get go. It came in slower and heavier than predicted by GM when the concept was unveiled. $30K OK I would buy one. $45K no way.

I hope they sell more than 11,703 of them

If they come down to 30K for a new one,,,,,I'd be interested. I was shocked to see one going through the wholesale dealer auction two months ago,,,now I know why.

That's weird. I see a lot more of them on the road than Prowlers. It seems like a I see one just about every day, and not just in Michigan. I only see a Prowler about every other month.

I am still the only Prowler on the road here at home, but I see three or four SSR's around town. I was unaware they were building up in inventory. I like the looks of them also.

They have made 10 or more thousand already for 2004, expect 10-15,000/yr.. I don't know about the sales amounts.

2003-2004 SSR has 300hp 5.3L engine. Only auto transmission.

2005 will have 390hp 6.0L engine (New Corvette engine). Available 6sp manual. Dropping Ultra Violet color and adding Aqua Blur.

Jim - NO, the cats are staying. I have a Dakota SLT extended cab as a boat hauler and may want to change someday. Seen a SSR in Texas pulling a cat on a trailer, so I know it can handle my boat.

I saw 4 or 5 SSR running around in my small town but at the dealer they still want $5000.00 market adjustment. I rather by another used prowler for that price.

The local dealer here also has one on the floor and is holding on for $50,000. If I get one it will be be a couple years from now.

To be honest ,if they had the prowler and the SSR side by side at the dealer when I bought , my user name would not be Pumpkin. Now for the 2005 SSR, I may look in to it. That is if the price is close to retail.

Norm: I would still take the Prowler first, but the SSR would run a close second.

Might be a tad better with 390 hp but its big and bulky - my guess is sales will never reach targets and it will be scrapped

I don't know why they make these things (SSR+Crossfire)then tell everyone they will have a bigger, more powerful engine the next year! Why buy one. Wait a year and get the horses! JMO

The SSR shares alot of the same issues as the Prowler.

1) Prices - although not as inflated as the prowler initially was, prices for the SSR ranged from $15-30K over sticker (first prowlers were $60-100K over)

2) Toy - it's a nice toy car, like the prowler. Most will not buy this as primary transportation..

3) Who's the target audience - like the prowler, it appeals to younger folks but, even at sticker (~$44K) it's out of most kids reach

4) Power - not really a true hot rod, not a family car, no stick (only auto-stick) and fairly flat "stock" power. These were the same gripes with most over the prowler.

I really wish the big three could reign in their showrooms and not let them gouge on sticker price as I think this sours alot of folks on alot of brands and cars.

I've enjoyed reading the views of my colleagues here. I am very interested in an SSR, but local dealers aren't budging off of sticker, and a few are asking 2 to 5K premiums.

I agree it's a toy (and a heavy one at that). Maybe I'd be better off taking this off of my "wish list" and saving for something else...like a Viper!

Dont know about you guys but I totally put the blame on dealers for inflating the price of these cars.I tried to buy a prowler when they first came out but refused to pay the $20,000.00 add on price, the T-Bird local dealers added on $15,000.00,Crossfire they added $5,000.00 just what kind of stupid people do they think they have for customers.I have refused to go into any of these dealers for anything no matter what they are selling.I wanted a new 300 but because of attemped scam by these dealers I bought a Town Car.Just had to get this off my chest.

It's not all dealers(seems like most). Many around here want more than sticker, I just keep walking. I found another local dealer who wants at least $1k less than sticker for any SSR.

Prowler was the same way with upgrades: 1997-214hp, 1999-253hp. etc.

Kevin, you can get a very nice used Viper now for the $45-50K that you would pay for a new SSR. I already have a Viper (1993), the SSR is #3 on my wish list.

I like the SSR much more in person than I did in the pictures. The price is a little steep but think about the collectability down the road. Did I just say that?

DC states that they don't condone price gouging by their dealers, but they don't do anything to stop it. Maybe they want to know what "is" is first?
About a year after I bought my 97, I heard on the radio news that 3 people filed a class action suit against VW for gouging way over price on their new bugs (no where near what the dealers were doing on the Prowler) and they won their case. Maybe that's what it's gonna take?

Here in St. Louis Dealers like Feld Chev. are discounting SSR's already, I liked the pictures better than the real car. Any time a special car like the Prowler or SSR or even a PT Cruiser comes out the dealers here add on what they call a fair market value, In other words they price gouge. That is why I could not buy a Prowler when they first came out. We all know this kills a lot of sales so why does the factory not step in and tell the dealers that if they want to keep their franchise they will not go over sticker. The first time I saw this was the Z-R1 Corvettes and then Vipers and I think car buyers are more aware that those inflated prices do not last and that is why sales on some of these cars are so low.

Well...let me be the first one on this thread to get flamed cuz the SSR does ZIP for me! And I DO like hot cars/hotrods such as Vettes GTOs Vipers Prowlers! I am not saying this to start a fight...simply voicing my 'free' opinion~such as it is~that the SSR doesn't appeal to me for any price! I simply don't care for the look! I've owned a '59 Vette, a '66 GTO, now a '99 Prowler, but...diff strokes I guess! OK, Flame ON....
Got my silver [Flame Retardant] suit donned! Ty-K

Hey Tytanium-K,

I'm with you, didn't like the pictures, don't like the vehicle. Would NEVER buy one. Would like a Viper to go with the Prowler. (shhhhh......, I don't even like mud flaps).
