Was wondering if there are any amateur OR professional biologists on the board - we found a rather weird looking spider in Heiki's flowers and were wondering if anyone had any idea what kind of spider this is - we've never seen any like it before ?! Its very unique colored and rather big (approx. 3-4" long)

THANKS

We got 'em all over the east Texas piney woods here. Can't help you with what it's called. Do a search for spiders. I did that once when looking for a certain one and it proved fruitful. If I find the link in my bookmarks, I'll post it for you.

They're called corn spiders. We first ran across them in the corn fields in Iowa and now they have made their way down here. Menacing looking guys!!!!! Tami

what an excellent idea Ken.....IF I had suicidal tendencies........because that would "end my existence" on the POA as well as on this earth - if she didn't beat me to death she'll shoot me, stab me , burn me, torture me or hunt me down until she can do all the before mentioned !!!

that's George!

We called 'em just plain ol' 'garden spiders' down in Texas. Had one right outside the window when we lived out in the country, had a 10-acre fruit tree orchard.. they were all over the place. Great to watch. The kids got quite a biology education watching them over the years.

"George" was our name for him/her

They are quite the web-weavers too!

Reminds me of that ol' saying :

When we fail to realize that every day is a miracle, we fail to live life.

I had one of those who lived on my deck just above the sliding door. He (actually she)was my buddy. She laid her eggs in the web and then died. I read up on them and that is what they do. So don't get too attached!

I was hoping she'd hurry up and lay her eggs. But instead that friggin' spider seems to get bigger every day. I won't even weed my flower bed anymore. And Dusti - go ahead and put it under my pillow if you have a death wish !!!

I have a phobia about Spiders..........can't handle them, no matter the size. I can handle snakes, mice, insects, etc..........NO spiders. Never could watch that movie "Arachnaphobia".........

Couldn't agree more with CJ.
If the animal has too many legs,it gives you the creeps....but then again if it has no legs wouldn't be one of my favorites as well!
Let's stick with dogs and cats...

Mickey.......post whatever you like......I just won't look! lol!

I think my phobia stemmed from an incident when I was a young girl. I was a Girl Scout and we were on a camping trip. I woke up during the night because the other girl in the tent was sick and coughing pretty badly. One of our leaders had come to the tent to check on her and she shined the flashlight on us. When I looked at her, I saw a very large spider crawling up my sleeping bag toward my face.........needless to say, I freaked!! Have not been able to handle spiders since then. Just thinking about it makes the hair on my arms stand up!

This one was on my face too. I was up in the attic when my new central air unit was getting installed, talking to the tech. Wasn't up there but maybe 5 minutes and got tagged right above my eye. Was new years eve. At the party that night I got feeling really "not right", and couldn't figure out why, cause I only had 1 or 2 beers. Now I know how it feels to be poisoned. It ended up in my lymph node on my neck and the whole side of my head swelled up and I thought I was going to lose an eye. I'll spare you the visuals, unless others wanna see the gore.

Brown Recluse is MR BillyB**As* in the spider world... well, one of em anyway, especially down in Tejas.

Wanna know a weird one...... one of (if not "THE" but don't wanna say that for sure) the spiders with the
'most deadly to human' venoms..............

ready?...........

GRAND DADDY LONG LEGS!

fortunately for us, they cannot sink their teeth into us!

At least I'm not the only one hating spiders. I don't know why - probably because my older brother used to put them in my bed to scare the s..t out of me.
I don't have a problem with snakes or mice,... Although I mistook a snake for a soaker hose and wondered what that was doing in between my flowers and then tried to pick it up until I realized the "soaker hose" moved. Bad idea !!!
Dusti thinks he's the "Crocodile hunter" and picks them up by the tail and carries them into the woods. I prefer our cat's way - he kills them and they hang out of his mouth on both sides like shoe laces !!!!

Once again... I refer the the Mythbuster's TV show...episode 13 in fact...

They showed that in fact, the Daddy long-legs are not deadly or super venomous, having very little if any effect on human beings. (They did a test where they extracted the venom and compared it to known venomous spiders, in addition to having them try to bite Adam...) It was actually quite funny, as Adam has a severe Phobia of spiders!
