That daring old company and its jaunty jalopy: Chrysler bets on Prowler as a cheap way to pep up Plymouth. Bill Vlasic. Abstract: The Plymouth Prowler, which Chrysler plans to produce, will be a $35,000 roadster-style convertible. The Prowler will have an all-aluminum frame and a 1930s look. Chrysler spent only $75 million on the development of the automobile. Products: Plymouth Prowler (Automobile) - Planning

Troy - Here's the math, do I win a prize? 11702 (number produced) x $35000 each = $409,570,000.00. Most of cars stickered for over $40,000. I believe I read that dealer cost on the 2001 and 2002 were in the low $40's. (sticker then was mid $40s) DC only had to make about $6000.00 on each to break even. Even if they lost, the dealers got a lot of traffic in the showrooms - some dealers still have Prowlers sitting in their showrooms - and that help sell more cars. I don't have a clue what it costs DC to build a vehicle and $6000+ per unit may or may not be reasonable on a car like the Prowler with so much new aluminum technology and low build per day production. I know the manufacturers make thousands on each new truck and that is why they like seeing SUV's so popular. DC may have made $$ or lost $25,000,000 or more for all I know. I am just One Happy Camper that they made the car so I could have one.

DC may lose $25 million on replacement chrome wheels and center caps. Just kidding. I'm sure the supply vendor takes the hit on those,,,,hence the high price of the wheels and caps.

Planning and pre production from concept to reality is where the greatest costa are. Have they lost money on the Prowler when it's all said and done-probably on paper only. The exposure that the brand got and will be getting for so many years to come will more than return its investment. How many times do we engage ina conversation with someone who doesn't have a clue that Chrysler manufactured this car-and a friend tells a friend who also tells a friend.....

In comparison, 75 million is cheap. Typically, depending on the vehicle, it costs around 1 billion to bring a car from concept to production.

Someone told me that it cost more to make each Prowler than the invoice price. That is, per vehicle sales Chrysler (Plymouth) lost $'s on each sale. How true, I don't know. But it's nice to think so! That means that not only am I thrilled to own a Prowler, but I also got a terrific deal (even at sticker price +).
