I need to figure out the best way to get some guns back from Michigan. Some family heirlooms. I know that as long as you let them know it was packed, and unloaded, you USED to be able to check it on a plane. Maybe you had to have it dismantled as well. Does anyone know if you still can ship a firearm on a plane? If not, what about the various state laws between Texas and Michigan in a car?

You cannot carry one in your carry-on luggage or on your person, obviously. Even if you are an on-duty police officer they will no longer let you carry a gun, even if you are bringing back a prisoner.
In checked luggage, I would disassemble it. You probably should call the airlines and ask them their policy, as it varies from carrier to carrier.
Ship part of them separately? or split them up between bags so no one complete gun is in one bag. Or just ship them UPS?
In a car, they cannot be in the passenger compartment or within reach of the car occupants. I would take it apart and put it in a locked box in the trunk. NO AMMO in the same car and you should be fine. If not, call A/C's attorney, Al Bendover. I am not attorney but I saw a guy play one on TV.

Carrying it on the plane with everything that is going on right now may not be the best solution. The precautions are unbelievable(which is a good thing),I just went through it last week.Check first with the airline if you decide to go that route!

My experiences on hunting trips has bee all over the board.

The rules depend on the states traveling to and from and also seem to vary according to the airline. In most cases the gun must be in a locked case. I have had to completely dismantle the gun and then put it back into a locked case. The case has always been place in the baggage compartment. This has been my experience.

I would call your airline first and then, if needed, your terminal for specific rules for departure and arrival terminals.

Don't forget about his friend Bubba, when you get thrown in jail... Al wasn't any help with my speeding ticket...

Yeah MeanCat that is all well needed... You with guns in Texas...

Airlines are finally getting more restrictive these days & I feel there are still loopholes. Call them first & get a definite answer. You might need some kind of locking box, but then again they say no locks... Since they are family heirlooms, I would definitely photograph & have them appraised & insured before you left. You might just have to transport by ground. Fly up, drive back. Guns can be replaced, but not the sentimental value... Why don't you go up for the Toronto event & pick them up on the way home. Is anyone coming up from your area for the event?

Alley Cat is right... They would be safe on the Greyhound... Heck everyone on the bus will already be carrying their own... Why would they want yours...

My CB handle back in the 70's was "Gunrunner". Don't think I'd use that handle anymore.

Thanks everyone for your input. I was thinking I might be flying up there this weekend but its looking more like next week. I'm leaning towards flying up there and driving back in a rental car.

I just traveled back from Florida 2 weeks ago on American. Always travel in country with a pistol checked, so I have it at the other end. Should not be a problem, but don't even think about bringing on your nail clippers, or you'll wind up with an extended stay at the Guantanimo Bay Motel 6...

Dali, that is so true. When I boarded the plane last week,I saw them interrogate one 80 or so year old lady for having a pair of knitting needles!
Keeping in ming as crazy as it seems,I totally support all the precautions and makes me terrified to fly these days.

Roman, letting 80 year old lady's through the airport with needles is not wise as I have been in many fights with 70 and 80 year old woman there tougher then they look let me tell you.(and just so you know I have won a couple)

Thanks,Larry-i think I'm going to stay put safely on the solid ground for now.
My wife met me at the airport and wondered why my skin had a slight green tint with it!

idive. . . Here's a link to an NRA website that might be able to give you some ideas. http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/FederalGunLaws.aspx?ID=70 Taking those guns back with you should definitely by do-able, but you will definitely need to do some coordination first (as well as perhaps needing to purchase the right kind of container to ship them in).

Jerry, that was partially the reason....the other reason was the thought of you running around carrying guns to Texas!

Thanks for the link Bill. I'll check it out. I talked to a very nice guy at the ATF today and got the scoop. He even made some calls for me to gather as much info as he could. Flying back with it is doable. So is driving back with it. Flying back with it tho is like flagging down a theif. The package will definitely be prominently marked that there is a gun (to steal) inside. He advised against this method. Shipping it is also doable but might be a little more tricky. UPS won't ship at all. Fed-Ex is stricter than the law requires, making a provision that there be a gun dealer on at least one end. I can ship it to a local gun store, and pay their fee (usually about $25 per gun). I will need a couple extra forms to fill out this way. One thing I forgot to ask about was any special packaging/shipping requirements, but I guess I can get that when I decide on how to go with this. He also told me the shotgun (or a rifle) would be no problem at all. The problem comes with the handgun. Getting a letter stating that they are inherited will help, as the law makes special provisions to allow for transportation of inherited firearms. Whichever I choose, he said all would want to see the gun to verify it is unloaded. He also advised getting it all set up beforehand too.
