I hire a guy to mow my lawn and take care of my plant beds, the latter of which he consistently fails to do. Late last week my lawn was almost a week overdue to be mowed and I tried calling this guy since my grass was almost a foot high. Both of his numbers had been disconnected. I wrote him a letter saying that I assumed that he has gone out of business and that I would consider my contract with him cancelled. Then I went out and bought a lawnmower and an edger and took care of the lawn myself.

Today when I got home, I noticed my lawn seemed slightly shorter than it had been this morning. Sure enough, the guy had mowed my lawn. He apparently wasn't phased by the fact that the lawn had a well-manicured look despite the fact that he hadn't shown up in 3 weeks, or by the letter he must have by this time received.

I tried to call the "new number" he now has on his bill to tell him that I'd pay him for today's mow but that would be it. It's a cell phone without voicemail. No one answered either.

not a lawyer but I have been in business nearly 40 years and have dealt with similar situations.....just send him a certified letter that he must sign for explaining the reason for cancelling your contract.....no threats, no accusations, just that you are unhappy with the service and wish to discontinue....if he gets nasty, just tell him to call your attorney and explain the situation to him, lack of service etc.....he will probably vanish from your life....if not let him take you to small claims court....a picture or two of your yard with the date wouldn't hurt either.....let him know you are prepared to fight this out and see if it is worth his lost time(revenue) and bad press he will get to see you in court.....

I don't anticipate any sort of major confrontation with this guy. I'm just constantly amazed at how badly so many businesses, large and small, are run.

At the doctor's office I work at, we had a lab company that consistently gave poor service. Instead of firing them, I did a little experiment. I just stopped sending them business. We had been calling them on a daily basis to come pick up lab specimens for processing. I said just stop calling them and see how long it takes them to contact us to inquire about why the lab calls have stopped.

A year and a half later, a representative from the company came by our office! He didn't come to find out what was wrong. He came to ask us if we wanted to sign up for their service! The office manager informed him, at great length, that we were already signed up and had switched to a competitor. The poor fellow left carrying a box of his company's equipment that we had stowed away in a cabinet 18 months before.

I feel sorry for these people. Honest to God, I do. What is it like to go through life being that clueless?

......I own quite a few different businesses in Indiana and Ohio....one of my biggest fears is losing control/touch with what my customers want and need....I have stores that I haven't personally visited in over a year, but I talk to the managers quite often, plus I have another layer of management that keeps me informed on a daily basis of any problems etc etc.....some companies just get so big and have so much turnover of employees, they just lose direction....everyone working there is just using the company as a stepping stone to something else...
try dealing with the phone company and see if you can find ANYBODY that really gives a sh!t if the customer stays or goes....as long as they get a paycheck, they could care less....unfortunately, the business and the employees paycheck are connected, no business, no paycheck....could rant for hours, but it does no good.......
....several years ago I tried to get some changes made to my long distance carrier in some of my stores.....the lady told me I was unauthorized to make changes TO MY OWN STORES....I asked her if I was authorized to cancell the service all together....well, it turns out I couldn't make changes to the service or cancell it....I told the lady to go stand by their company mailbox and when she didn't see my checks ever again, she would realize I really did have the final authority over my account.....they finally sued me after 2-3 years, sent a collectiuon agency after me, tried to scare me....didn't work.....they finally offered to settle with me for less than I had offered to pay them in the first place, PLUS THEY LOST ME AS A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE.......someone had their head up their corporate a$$ that day.....oh well.....

We are drowning in a sea of clueless morons....It's sad.

IE: A big comapny like GE put my friend out of business because they never filled his order right not even once. He sold starter equipment to contractors and lost major accounts due to GE's incompetence. I'll never buy a GE product again.

Now every comany routes their customer service calls TO INDIA because it's cheaper...WTF?@!?

BT,

I work for GE, and take only slight exception to what you posted. I agree it is easy to get lost in the eyes of a big company like GE, but it is unfair to characterize the entire company by just one example. There are seven major businesses within GE, each of which would be in the top 10 Fortune 10 company if run separately. Each major business has several vertical businesses which would also be in the Fortune 100 if run separately. But what it comes down to in GE is your individual business unit and that is where the customer cannot be lost. My customers know me and can call me 24/7. Not everyone at GE is a moron.

Also, I highly doubt you do not spend money on GE. Light bulbs and appliances make up less than one tenth of one percent of GE's income. If you eat at McDonald's, shop at Target, watch NBC, shop at Home Depot, use a cell phone, fly on an airplane, watch a movie, or even surf the internet; I guarantee a portion of what you are spending ends up in GE's coffer. If your kid has a Playstation from Sony, and you paid $199 for it, approximately $12 of that purchase went to GE.

Personally, I think GE is too big. But with over 400,000 employees, you are bound to find some morons. However, GE has a long standing policy that is hard to match elsewhere. Every year there are performance evaluations. The bottom 10 percent of all employees are fired. The top 10 percent are promoted. The middle 80 percent are allowed to stick around for another year. Jack's idea, not mine.

Good pay, excellent retirement and stock benefits, and countless opportunities. But check out my kitchen, I have Kenmore appliances and Sylvania light bulbs.

Just my opinion. Sorry about your friend.

Guy

That would be an interesting corporate motto. A little edgier than "We bring good things to life," but still...

That's hilarious! I'm gonna print that one out. The applications are endless!

UPDATE:

I called lawn guy and got his voicemail. I left a message explaining the situation and asked him to call me back. No reply so far. I love any business where the people are so inaccessible that it's hard to even cancel their service.

rsterling78,
Just don't pay him. He will be in touch soon enough. Then let him get YOUR voicemail.

We had the exact same problem with a lawn guy in Florida. Not to put Florida prowler owners down or anything, but it seems that Florida has a rather high percentage of schmucks per capita...

Anyway, same story. My wife sees him pull up in the drive after 3 1/2 weeks of non service, and politely tells him his services are no longer needed. I'm in the open garage letting her handle him. Well he goes nuts, shaking a rake at her, and calls her a F****NG B**CH....At the end of the day, I ended up mowing the lawn myself and paid for his Dentist to go to Europe for 2 weeks.....

It never fails to startle me, the amount of damage a clueless jerk can do.

UPDATE:

I called lawn guy yet again and again got his voicemail. I left a message but also sent him a certified letter. According to my wife, he still hasn't cashed the check we wrote him quite a few weeks ago for services rendered.

On a somewhat related note, I've been trying to get a business colleague to return a piece of paper I mailed him (along with a self-addressed stamped envelope) that requires nothing more than his signature for 3 weeks.

At my business I return every phone call I get the same day. Anything I get that needs to be signed is signed and mailed or faxed back the same day, too.

It's funny to go into the bookstore and see all these books on managerial excellence and making one's business perform outstandingly. How about showing the hell up for work for starters? How about actually doing something once you get there? Learn to crawl before you walk, people.

It seems like the fly-by-night companies are alive and well.Don't you love phone numbers you can never reach with people that never return messages!I'd rather pay more to get better service...and no hassles to go with that!

UPDATE:

Lawn guy is still MIA.

On a brighter note, my business colleague got the sheet of paper I sent him almost a month ago signed and mailed back to me. We mailed it off today (i.e. the same day we got it). Want to know what he signed? He agreed to be my back-up if I'm out of town or unavailable. Yes, the person who will be on-call at a moment's notice if I'm away took most of four weeks to sign his name to a piece of paper.

Didn't cash the check.... Maybe you got lucky, and the world is spinning with one less jerk on it !!

As far as your co-worker; that sucks! I cant imagine putting my name and reputation on the line with someone who acts like that. Sorry, but that is downright disrespectful. I personally would tell all clients that I'd be gone for a couple of weeks, and would return their call upon my arrival, rather than let this person make me look like a fool.

Service is rotten everywhere. I am disgusted with almost all I have seen. While I would certainly never condone it, I can understand it when I hear that someone snapped in a McDonalds and mowed 5 people down....
