Ronald W. Reagan 6 February 1911 - 5 June 2004 40th President of the United States To some he was a B-movie actor who was out of his element as an American President. To others he revitalized the American economy, restored pride in our country, and won the Cold War. Ronald Reagan died today. He was 93. Reagan seemed destined for relative obscurity until he gave a 30-minute speech at the 1964 Republican National Convention endorsing Barry Goldwater. In 1967, Reagan became governor of California. Reagan would win back-to-back landslides in the Presidential elections of 1980 and 1984. He survived an assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr. on March 30, 1981. During his years in office, Reagan promoted tax cuts and government deregulation, both still staples of modern conservative thought. His presidency would not be without controversy: In 1985, Reagan visited the German military camp at Bitburg, which contained graves of Nazi soldiers of the Waffen SS. The Iran-Contra Affair would also blight his second term in office. He established a personal friendship with Soviet Premier Mikail Gorbachev and signed the INF Treaty with the U.S.S.R. In a 1987 speech at the Brandenberg Gate separating West and East Germany, Reagan famously challenged the Soviet leader: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Two years later, Eastern Europe would be swept by anti-Communist revolutions. In 1991, the Soviet Union voted itself out of existence. Reagan announced in 1994 that he had Alzheimer disease and disappeared almost completely from public view thereafter. To Republicans he was the father of modern conservatism. To Democrats, he was an ideological opponent whom even they acknowledged had a seemingly endless supply of charm and charisma. Reagan is survived by his wife, Nancy, and three children. |

God Bless Mr. Reagan, I was fortunate enough to have him as Commander and Chief while I was in the Navy from 82-86. He actually was on board my ship, USS New Jersey (BB-62), when it was recommisioned on December 28,1982 in Long Beach,CA. We have lost a great leader and a true gentleman. I feel he did tremendous amount for our great country while he was in office. Have a nice weekend everyone! Brian |

I never liked the man. I always voted in every election til his 1980 run. I wouldn't have voted for him had I been allowed to vote. Long story behind that, but in short, I registered, then moved after registration deadline, so couldnt re-register with new address. Neither precinct would let me vote (in spite of the fact that the election judge assured me if I came down and talked directly to him, that he would let me vote). I was p!$$ed! Felt like somehow the elections were rigged. Didn't even try to vote again for 10 years after that. I felt that during his term, he commented that our oil reserves were sufficient and that for the time being, we didn't need to drill for more. This meant there was no need to draw more rigs (my line of work), or build more rigs. This put MANY engineers, designers, and draftsmen out of work, closed steel companies, and displaced many workers in related industries nationwide. But looking back over his entire presidency, I gotta say, the man was a good president, and got a hell of alot of positive things accomplished. Hearing of his death saddened me, and gave me cause for pause and reflection, and I raise my cup and make a final toast to the Gipper... |

For me, if I look up the phrase "President of the United States" in the dictionary, I would expect to see President Reagan's picture. I have been alive during at least part of the presidency of eleven men. . .but he is the one against whom I judge all others. None have measured up thus far and I don't expect anyone ever will. I've missed him for the last 10 years and I'm glad that both he and his wife can rest after the torments of that horrible disease. God bless the United States and God bless Ronald Reagan. . . |

A fond farewell to the great communicator and the unifier of the United States of America. He ended the cold war and we owe him a debt which can never be repaid. |

When I heard about his passing on the news, I think I must have just sat there for about 10 minutes speechless. The weird thing is, you knew it was coming, but even knowing still doesn't prepare you for how you feel when it happened. Needless to say I went and ate about 2lbs of Jelly Beans that night as a tribute... He will be sorely missed. ------------------ This message has been edited by TBlatnica on 06-07-2004 at 11:26 AM |

Heard the news and watched the proceeds while in the Carib. Even thought I knew it was coming, I felt a great sense of loss when it finally happened. Watching the C-Span call-ins and recap of Ron's life was a reminder of how divided we are as a country, politics wise. I liked him. R.I.P. Ron. |
