DETROIT (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler's (NYSE:DCX - news) (DCXGn.DE)
Chrysler division is recalling more than 438,000 PT Cruisers because
power steering fluid can leak from the vehicles, causing potential
engine compartment fires, federal safety regulators said on Friday.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news - web
sites) said 438,391 PT Cruisers from the 2001-2004 model years were
affected by the recall, which is a blow to Chrysler's recent claims
about improved quality.

NHTSA said the safety defect stemmed from contact on some of the
vehicles between a high pressure power steering hose and the
automatic transaxle differential cover.

Chrysler spokeswoman Curtrise Garner said there had been nine reports
of underhood fires apparently caused by the problem.

"The likelihood of fires is very low," she said, adding that no
injuries or deaths had been reported.

Anyone with a PT get a recall notice. We got one for Sandy's 2001 (which we bought used from Steve Clark) but none for my 2002, which we bought new.
Today I got a recall for my 94 Intrepid, which was pristine but abused by Alley Cat. I sold it about 2 1/2 years ago.

As of this date, we have not received one on the 2002 PT Cruiser our daughter has but will definitely be on the lookout for it.
Thanks "Pumpkin" for your post.

We got our recall Monday. Made appointment with the dealer. As of today they have not replaced any hoses at our dealer.

This is a longstanding issue with many Chrylser vehicles. This is the first I have heard of one being recalled for it. I read an article recently online (in alpar I think) detailing this. I also just noticed that my power steering groan on my van has gotten worse (it's groaned since new and dealer said they all do). After checking the power steering fluid level, I saw NOTHING on the dipstick. After filling it up, I noticed immediately it was leaking right back out at the hose underneath.

Pristine Intrepid of yours? All quarters rusted through,,,two doors of different colors,,,mirrors ripped off,,,huge blue smoke cloud emitting from engine,,,muffler dragging on the ground,,,no wheel covers,,,front and rear bumpers crushed in,,,,and it looked like a wild dog chewed up the entire interior...

Yup, it was pristine, lol.

Sure, it was not perfect but except for those slight imperfections that you so eloquently pointed out, it WAS pristine. lol

I called the dealer and took Sandy's car in. They said D-C is doing the recall in sections so they do not get swamped all at once. Recalls will be coming, I guess.

It looks like they are spacing them out about a month. Oct. for 2001, Nov. for 2002, so look for one after the first of the year.

I took mine in late this afternoon to leave it. They told me it would take about 10 minutes since only ONE out of 100 has needed a new hose, all the other ones were okay. It took them about 10 minutes to look at it and I was out of there.
