Drivers line up for 35-cents-a-gallon gas
Motorists came from as far as West Covina for the radio-station promotion.

By JENNIFER KANNE
The Orange County Register

CYPRESS – Motorists began lining up eight hours early for a radio station promotion that sold gasoline at 1969 prices, police said today.

The Chevron station at Lincoln Avenue and Moody Street opened at 7 a.m., and by 8 a.m. the line snaked from the pumps, around corners for several blocks, with some motorists coming from as far as West Covina.

Four cars ran out of gas while waiting and had to be pushed to the pumps.

In all, 122 vehicles got fill-ups at 35 cents a gallon when the K-Earth 101/FM promotion ended precisely 101 minutes after it began, at 8:41 a.m., leaving dozens of vehicles still in line.

Those who got the cheap gas said the savings made it worth the wait.

Diane Turner of Huntington Beach pulled her white Ford Windstar van into line at 4 a.m.

Asked why, she replied, "Otherwise, all I’d be doing is sleeping."

Customer No. 121, who was supposed to be the last, declined to give her name, because the promotion made her late to work.

She said she had left her car in line, walked home to get ready for work, then took the bus back to the line before the cheap gas began flowing at 7 a.m.

After officials ended the promotion, David Morehouse of Long Beach managed to convince station operators to let him in under the wire because he was driving a 1969 Chevy truck.

"I deserve the 1969 prices," he said.

I put gas in the gas can for the lawn mower and it was $ 6. I used to fill the car up cheaper than that. (But I am old.)

I've done some of these type promos with radio stations.

Ex. A station's frequency is 107.5, we would see gas for 1 hour at $1.075.
