For those of you who have never seen them, a few pics.[img]

The brown things are not mulch. That is the shells that they crawl out of after emerging from the ground. These were not piled up, that is how many are laying right where they left them.

Last week

This week. They are so loud in the daytime that you can hear them while riding a mower, full throttle. Pretty quiet at night or in the rain. The worst is still a few weeks away, probably.

Jan, the birds eat them and the squirrels are going nuts eating them. The squirrels will need to go on Atkins after this is over. They come down that oak tree and were going into the Hostas and we could not figure out what was going on since the cicadas were not visible yet. They never made it to the top of the leaves since the squirrels were pigging out.
They are safe for human consumption but not by this human. I would think fish would eat them. They must only live a day or two. They already smell from dying and laying in the grass. They land on your back and come in the house and the garage is constantly full of the shells. I guess they blow in when the door is up.

So far, lucky. They are in some wooded areas nearby but not in my yard, yet.

Ed:

We have seen signs of them just emerging her in NC.
They have chewed at the base of new growth on one of our Crepe Myrtles to the point that about half of the new growth has fallen off. We have heard them a little, but not much.

You're right. I read somewhere that they are a delicacy in some cultures.

What I find strange is that all I've heard is that they only come out once every 17 years, but we had them here approx. 7 0r 8 years ago and now again? Maybe different parts of the country get them worse in different cycles.
When we last had them they were as bad as the pics you show. I had to use my backpack blower each day to blow out my carport, sidewalks, patio, etc. so we wouldn't track them or their shells inside. I would scoop the shells up with a snow shovel and put them in a 50 gallon trash can and would have a can a week of the shells.

Good luck with these critters! I f I remember right they were about a 6 week nuisance.

They don't eat plants, just make slits in the new growth of trees, therefore very young or small trees can die.
It is getting worse every day, for sure.
They make about 1/4 inch hole in the ground from a pretty deep depth, to emerge. I couldn't aerate (?) the ground as well as they are doing. We get very small amounts every year but the MAIN group is every 17 years. Some are probably just off a year or two and they the next generation is also off.
We are looking forward to missing about 10 days of it while in Texas. Some neighborhoods have a lot more, some have basically none.

Ed - most newer developement, built in last 17 years taht they have been hibernating, don't have Cicadas since during developement they usually scrape off much of the top layers of original soil. So I was told! That' why some neighborhoods have virtually none.

Marty, interestingly enough, my oldest son called and told me they had way more cicadas than we do. (He was here a week or 10 days ago, when they first started emerging). He lives in a fairly new house but they did not knock down every tree so some of the ground stayed intact. I have to agree with what you said. For the most part they strip the top soil and build the houses and then put the top soil back and plant 5 foot trees. A lot of it depends on how dense the trees are, keeping the ground cool longer. The ground has to get to 65 degrees, followed by rain before they will emerge. There is a park across from my rental garage and there was not a cicada to be seen last week. They might be out by now.
Rsterling, we would need at least 200 of them in the yard and they would need to be cleaned or replaced in a couple of days.
They don't do any damage. Don't eat anything, don't bite or sting. They are just messy and overwhelming in number and then they smell as they deteriorate. They are pretty stupid and clumsy, as well.

Ed-

There was a letter to the editor in the local paper that said there are annual cicadas that are about 1.5 times bigger than the 17 year ones and they are green in color instead of the reddish/brown color of the 17 year ones. More importantly is that they come out in small numbers.
