I like Sony and haven't try their new dvd camcorder. It's some where around $800-900 on the internet. It all depends what are you are planing to do after you record it...ex: view it from your recorder; make dvds...etc...But, now they even have HD camcorder above $3000.00...

BTW, here are some websites you can take a look at for the Sony DCR DVD201 DCR DVD201 that Ron has indicated...

Also check Canons GL2 or GL1, I use these cameras with my
production company, these are the cameras you'll see being used on MTV,HBO,Playboy ect. They are Mini DV and feature
movie mode, 16 bit stereo audio and are very easy to use while getting pro shots. They also have S-Video and firewire
ports and a AV digital out for RCA connectors. One important
feature is pixels and lines of resolution which I think are 500 lines (Broadcast quality)I have seen GL1's on ebay or some online companys between $1400 and $2500. check out the Canon sight for tech information, they also take great still pictures.

I just sold a Sony dvd 300 camcorder and it was a major dissapointment.....
heavy,
recorded only 30 min on an 80 mm dvd,
realy on works with genuine Sony $8.00 dvds
produced video in a format that you cannot edit on your computer
very over priced

I suggest a digital 8mm compact sized camcorder. I have a sony and make sure it has pass-through for editing.

Wow, now that's a huge disappointment...

Richard, do you recall what kind of a format that was? Did you use it in Adobe Premier? I was planning to buy one. Thanks for the info.

Richard: That's what I have noticed that the DVD video does not have any type of software that can support editing on it. The mini does however. Thanks for the input. I've never had a Sony so far, love the one I have but would like to have one that I can work with on the computer easier than having to work with a capture card. T

I have the Sony TVR22 Mini DV and am very happy with it. Small and lightweight. It has image stabilization and SuperNight Mode for low level light situations (Paris Hilton video ) It comes with sofware for editing and has both USB and Firewire output. I also purchased Pinnacle Studio 9 which is great for creating your own movies. If you are satisfied with the Mini DV format you can't go wrong with this unit. The only downside is the low resoultion for stills but I have a 5MP Cannon for that.

Howler Cat: I think the format was a proprietary MPEG format.

I too recommend the miniDV camcorders. I have the first small format miniDV camcorder that Sony made about seven years ago. But, I would stay away from the dvd recorders for now. I used Pinnacle studio 8 and it works fine. Some earlier Pinnacle products were a problem, but they finally got it right.

Thanks Richard,

I will stay with MiniDV for now. I have been using MiniDV for over 4 years. Just thought I can save a few hours of processing captured avi to mpeg2.
