Tonight we were eating at Applebee's (which is now smoke-free, by the way). There was a poster on the wall next to our booth with painted pictures of country music stars. I am not a big country music fan so I didn't know very many. The obvious ones, Johnny Cash, Alabama, etc. In the upper left corner was one of the hosts of HEE HAW and the other host was in the lower right hand corner. For the life of me, I could not think of their names. Our waitress came over to get our order and I asked her if she knew any of the "stars" on the poster. She asked, "personally?, No", which should have been a clue. I asked her if she knew the names of the two stars of HEE HAW and she looked puzzled and said, "I really don't know what HEE HAW is". That is when we realized we are getting really old. The names Roy Clark and Buck Owens finally came to me.

Ed - I suspect you go back much further than Roy Clark and Buck Owens,,,,,,,more like Gene Autrey and Tex Ritter, lol. Didn't you start your acting career with Charlie Chapman?

Chaplin, not Chapman. lol Yes, on the other two counts. Double features every Sunday. Two or three theatres within a couple of blocks. About 10 or 12 theatres downtown. Walk in free at the drive-in, a block from home. That was basically out in the country back then. Now it is in the middle of town.

She didn't know Buck Owens and Roy Clark? I guess the name "Junior Samples" wouldn't have rung a bell, either. I've experienced the inverse of this myself: I've noticed that the magazines at Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million have an increasing percentage of "famous" celebrities and musicians on their covers that I've never heard of. And not a one of them looks like Grandpa Jones.

I do know there is a bluegrass band called "BR549". I wonder how many people know where that name came from. It also kills me when they tell me "Twist and Shout" by the Isley Bros. was from some movie in the 80s. Not a clue. rsterling, I also notice I know absolutely no one on the front of the magazines as the doctors' offices (where I seem to be spending more time).

This is a true story. A buddy of mine was at Tower Records several years ago and he was just browsing the rock section. A group of young kids are nearby and one of them holds up a Beatles CD and says to the others, "Hey check this out...Paul McCartney was in another group before Wings." We all assume everyone knows who was in the Beatles, but apparently not. THAT makes me feel old! While I never cared much for C&W, I did enjoy Hee Haw. It's interesting that when I was living in Africa in the mid-90s two of the most popular American singers there were Dolly Parton and Don Williams! Does anybody remember the name of the folk trio Don Williams was in during the 60's?
