As of today I ahve worked at IBM 35 years. I am officially retired from IBM, I now work here as a contractor. I left on a Friday as an employee and started the following Monday as a contract employee.

I'm sure you're thrilled about all the well deserved time off you're going to have. Now you can attend all the events and then some!

Rich...CONGRATS on hangin in there so long. I almost know the feeling as I will have 27 years with Volkswagen Engineering in July. But I don't think I will match your senority time, because I'm planning on being able to afford an "early" retirement, assuming all things line up as planned. Then I would like to decide to finally leave when the time comes that I'm not having FUN anymore. I do believe that for a person to last at a job this long...they have to be having FUN doing it, cause once it is really "work" a person has to move on.... My guess is "for the majority of the time" you have experienced 35 years of FUN...JMO

Rich....first of all, congratulations kid......... ....summer of 1969 I went to school to become a computer programmer, we were trained in Cobal, RPG and Fortran(it has been so long I am not even sure of the spelling anymore)....I remember lots of codes and binary numbers....we were even trained to use the wire boards(ever see those)......all of our programming practice was done in Indy at a department store warehouse the school rented on weekends....we used the IBM 360 model 20 I believe it was called....it was a state of the art piece in 1969.....ended up getting a job at a large insurance company in Indy for daily processing and did a few program modifications and wrote a few of my own while I was there.....we had IBM repairmen in quite often to "super tune" our IBM 360/20 and I thought thats what I really wanted to do, even more than programming.....had an interview set with IBM in 1970 and found out Uncle Sam was hiring(whether I wanted a job or not).....ended up in the USAF working with equipment so old I didn't even know how to read the paper tapes(looked like braille cash register tapes).....transfered to accounting/payroll and stayed there for the rest of my 4 years......today I have retail stores and my wife is the "nerd", she works for a chain of banks and is the head of "IT".....my son also has a computer/internet business that I understand very little about.... my computer expertise these days is pretty much limited to the various message boards for variuous types of cars............ ........IBM was a top notch place to be in 1969, and apparently stayed that was for the next 35 years....hope you enjoy your retirement kid.... .......larryThis message has been edited by tangled up in BLUE on 05-12-2004 at 07:43 PM

Sorry I confused people. Let me clarify. I still work there 40 hours a week, I am just no longer an IBM employee I am a contract employee working for a company called Spherion. They are like a glorified temporary service and sell my services to IBM. I hope to continue to work until age 62 before I completely retire. I have to keep paying for my Prowler Mod addiction

Congrats, Rich! Any company that keeps employees for 35 years these days deserves a thumbs up. Many companies continue to downsize and retire their employees early.

CONGRATS RICH,,,,,,,,,,,did they buy you a Rolex?I spent 30 years as a meat cutter (flunked out of med school in college**) and 28 years with AlphaBeta/ABCO until they closed all their operations in Arizona in 2001. I had only 2 1/2 more years to go until full pension, but I had enough of that line of work after 30 yrs and took an early retirement settlement figure. Glad I did, so much happier now. ** - they told me I was only good enough to be a butcher

Bell and Gatlin - my patients never complained or filed law suits. Nothing like a thick, choice ribeye coming off the grill pink.
