In the Monday night chat session I mentioned that I heard on NBC Nightly News that we are setting free the Al Qaida terrorists that we captured and are detaining in Guantonamo Bay, Cuba. Grrowl said I must be talking about the ones we returned to Britain about a month ago (who THEY then set free). Not so... On Tuesday night they followed up that story stating that 6 are slated for military tribunal, while another 50 or so may face the same fate, however as many as 400 are slated for release by year's end. WHY???!!! We send our fine brave men and women over there in harms way to capture these culprits only to prematurely set them free to come after us all over again. Why even bother? Its an insult to our men and women over there laying their lives on the line, not to mention a slap in the face to every American citizen! Why worry about their "rights"? They gave up those rights when they did what they did! Where were these rights activists when they blew us up? What about OUR rights??? All the more reason to take no prisoners, give no quarter!! NOT JMO...

Yes, but we'll be sending them back to the middle East in a jet with only enough fuel to get halfway across the Atlantic and tuned up by Isreal's Mousad

In the interest of free speech, I must present a few facts in this discussion here. The detainees you speak of here were largely captured on the battlefield in Afghanistan during offensives in 2001 and 2002. Over 10,000 combatants were captured during this time, and only 650 were eventually moved by the US military from Afghanistan to Cuba. These combatants are considered Prisoners of War and not necessarily terrorists. Blanketly labeling Middle Eastern fighters as terrorists is as stupid as linking all Christians to the KKK (a Christian organization!) Are there terrorists being held in Gitmo? Absolutely. Will some of the repatriated prisoners continue to fight against the West? Absolutely. Can we hold Prisoners of War forever. No. There is a due process even in military law. Prisoners are being repatriated to their country of origin when there can be no evidence produced linking them to crimes punishable off the battlefield and hostilities have ceased. Prisoners that can be linked to terrorist activities are held and prosecuted. Some of these prisoners have been in custody over three years and many of them were just soldiers defending their homeland. Speaking from experience, most soldiers do not relish war. Additionally, we will not defeat terrorism by adopting the methods of terrorists.
