...The last few years I have been looking to replace certain cars from my teen years.....the top pix is a car that I truly loved, but destroyed like most young guys have a propensity to do.....I bought the car new in the spring of '69....special ordered with a 396/375 4spd and NO POWER OPTIONS(even had a manual top)so it would be faster and cheaper.....absolutely railroaded the car...it was damaged severly just a few hours after the blurry pix was taken when it was only 3 weeks old....but I continued to drive it another 600 miles that night with the tail lights stuffed up under the rear glass....it was hurt bad, but ran fine... I raced the car against ANYTHING that had wheels and beat most...it was very fast.....It also served daily duty as my commuter car adding over 120 miles to the odometer everyday, then cruising that much or more every night....in 18 months/72K miles it had 5 sets of tires, 2 transmissions, 2 engines, several clutches and was involved in quite a few scrapes with the local authorities, but I always got away....when I joined the USAF I had the car repaired and repainted "Steel Cities Gray" to hide the battle scars and change the cars look and identity....then I found out Uncle Sam wanted me to go places I couldn't take the MIGHTY 396....the car was sold before I even saw it repainted, a local Ford dealership purchased the car from my dad....it was stolen off their lot and recovered in Indy with the linkage jammed(it did that all the time).....the car was eventually sold to a guy not far from my town....in 1971 I received a letter from a buddy of mine that had seen the Chevelle crushed in a junk yard.....he recognized the new gray paint......now flash from 1971 to 2004.....thought I found a copy of the car a few days ago, didn't pan out yet....BUT, I have discovered another clone to my old car....we are starting negotiations .....the last 2 pix are of the new 1969 Chevelle SS 396...it is a 2 owner with 20K miles......I sure hope this works out.....maybe you really can go back in time........ I am still searching for a '68 GTO conv like the one I had new in 1968.....

Nice car Larry.....hope it works out for you. I had a 66 Malibu, but it wasn't the SS.

tangled -

I envy you guys who had those cool cars as teenagers (today too!). My first car was purchased in 1969 from our neighbor and was a used '64 Volkswagen beetle. $500. It was British racing green. My Dad helped me to extend the seat rails all the way back to the back seat so I could get my 6' 4" frame in it.

I wrecked it while fighting with my best friend over which 8 track tape to play. I wanted to play 3 Dog Night and he wanted to play Alice Cooper. Hit a parked car head on. Fixed it back up and painted it "Big Bad Orange". Called it Pumpkin. Lifted it, put Chevelle SS mags on it with white letter Goodyears. Lace painted the glove compartment door. Put an FM tuner in it. Talk about a Redneck!

Drove it until the spring of my freshman year in college when the engine finally blew due to the climbs up I-40 at the Continental Divide.

Then I got a '69 Chevelle from an estate sale. No SS or anything close. Sky blue with vinyl bench seats. Paid $900. Drove it thru college. Driver's side door got backed into. Hit & run and I had NO money. Borrowed $50 from Dad and got a black door at a junkyard. Painted it close to the same color of blue with spray cans and bought some white pinstripeing from Kmart to finish the job.

Yes, I know what you mean, I wish I had my 65 Vette with 396 engine back. The 65 Vette was the first year for big blocks and they only made 2165 Vette with a 396.

Tangled - check out www.marshallantiquecars.com they have 3 GTO's - 2 are '68. The other is a '66 I think. (Sorry - their 68's are hardtops.) You might want to do a search on there for other cars you are looking for or call them and see if they know where you can run across one.
