I get to many pop ups, and to much email spam, is that a virus? And oh yeah, sometimes my home page gets changed to Microsoft search engine. I use to have a so called pop up blocker, but it seemed to do more bad then good. I use Internet Explorer, I know Dan does not have a lot of experience with that, sooooooooooooooooooooo My plan was to uninstall the explorer, and reinstall it. ????? Any computer guys out there have some other advise? Thanks in advance. |

Here's a suggestion. Spend more time driving the Silver Bullet until you can get Dan over to repair your computer! ------------------ |

Popups and e-mail spam are two separate issues. For spam, ther'es unfortunately no way to stop receiving it...the best you can do is to use a program that can "filter" your mail. These filters analyze the subject and content of the message to determine if something is junk or if it is legit. Unless you tend to order a lot of Viagra onilne they should work for you What e-mail client are you using? Outlook? As to popups...those annoying ads you see appearing above/below browser windows... You need a popup blocker to get rid of them. My 'personal' recommendation would be to use a different Web Browser then Internet Explorer. Commercial options like Opera and open source (e.g. "free") options like Mozilla have the ability to prevent web pages from opening up popup windows. There are also some software packages that claim to do the same for Internet Explorer though I have never tried them. Reinstalling Explorer won't help you solve the problem. I think Micro$oft is going to make a popup blocker for Internet Explorer but only for their MSN subscribers. If you don't own MSN, though, the easiest solution for popups is probably to just use a browser other then IE. ed |

Hey Sexless, glad to hear someone else using Mozilla Mike doesn't use it, but Chris and I do, absolutely no pop up adds get thought.......But, it doesn't like some videos, like I don't see the News bar above General Discussion on the Main Discussion Board page. I also have a problems with Private Messages- PM's( why I don't use them very often)it doesn't let me respond. I like the favorite tabs at the top, easy to get to my most frequented sites. |

There are viruses out there that will change your homepage but that doesn't neccessarily mean you have a virus causing that. I've had mine change before and had no viruses. If you don't have an antivirus software on your system, you really should look into getting one. You can also scan your system online for free at some sites. I find that if Yahoo! is your ISP (internet service provider) you get alot of popups. |

JD, Go to panicware.com, and download and install their free version of pop up stopper. I use IE 6.0 with this pop up stopper, and have had no problems at all. If you do get to a place where you need to see the pop up, you just hold down the ctrl button, and it will allow you to see the pop up. Hope this helps. I installed the Google Toolbar, It has a popup blocker that has stopped 100 percent of popups on Explore 6.0. I have had it on now for about 4 weeks and it has stopped 755 popups according to it counter. Here is the link to their download site. I hope this helps your problem. http://toolbar.google.com/ Tate |

The blocker works good. Now, I thought there was a way to filter out my outlook express? I tried to avoid anything from yahoo, except using their dsl service, (only game in town). So I dont use their home page, or tool bar. But they do say they have some kind of filter, I may have upload yahoo tool bar after all. |

JD - there are some services out there that will act as a go between when it comes to email. It will force the user to enter a password that is shown in a graphic. This ensures that the email received is from a real person. You can also go in and authorize email addresses for things like newsletters you want to subscribe to. Take a look at spamarrest.com - I have thought about using the service very seriously, but I just can't get past the $35/year subscription. Here is their URL http://spamarrest.com/tryit/index.jsp ------------------ |

JD, Changing home pages ... my guess would be spyware. It's not a virus so the virus software doesn;t block it. It doesn't come through email so no spam blocking. It does come from visiting suspect sites that simply include these programs with stuff you might allow. You have no way of knowing. Check out http://www.lavasoft.de/ for info in a free version of ad-aware. This is an application that will clean up most of the spyware on your machine. however, sometimes the applications are very hard to remove. McAfee also has a program out for blocking spyware proactivly. But it's still building it's database of threats. Currently, I don't know of a single program that takes care of this issue. We use a combination of products (described above) and security settings to resolve it in my office. Hope that helps. |

Lick Observatory... do you actually get any scope time? Or just enjoy the view from there Must be awesome, either way. You California & Arizona people have it made in that respect. Astronomy is one of my great loves... just dont get as much (enough) time/ warm weather here for it as I used to when I lived in Texas. Sure do miss those skies. But the Great Thing about living in the northern USA is I get Northern Lights... saw a light flareup just last week They're very cool! |
