I have been tracking Vipers a bit lately and it seems that darn near every other one has had the motor rebuilt by "A Qualified Chrysler Technician" or some MotorSports place. I am serious about 1 94-98 Viper when the Prowler payment is gone..... Are these cars unreliable and/or prone to engine troubles ? Where is the best place/book/web site to research this ? Thanks, John ------------------ 2001 Orange, Mopar Exhaust, MTD Intake, Front and Rear Mud Flaps, Chrome Shimmers, Orange Prowler Logo Valve Caps, Ceramic Brake Pads, Prowleronline.com License Bracket, Eric Wolf Chrome Trans Cover, Mopar Hitch and Trailer. |

...early Gen 1 Vipers all have coolant leaks sooner or later....the head gaskets were bad .....Vipers do have various problems from time to time, but many are driver related....I have owned 8 of them and only had one with any amount of problem and it was repaired under warranty....the other 7 have been virtually trouble free for me....but I don't track the cars or abuse them to any degree......they are amazingly solid cars in my view...they are more fun than you ever bargained for.... |

Part may be due to reliability (check out what DC thinks the residual is worth on a 3-4 year lease) The other big part is probably the way most folks who buy one, drive em. And like anything else, most folks probably don't leave them stock and alot of that stuff can reek havoc on an engine. I have known of highly modified ones sticking in WOT. Just goes with the territory I guess. |

It seems to me that Vipers often fall into 2 classes: 1. Cars that have been driven hard/tracked. I had a '97 GTS that had a bad intake gasket and leak at the top of the windshield. Other than that, no problems. Next came a 2002 GTS that I had for a little over a year with no problems at all. Only but 3,700 miles on it. Now I have an 2003 SRT10. Had it since last June. Only problem with it has been a switch that trips the drivers door solenoid only works about half the time. Check out the FAQ section of the Viper site Gary linked above, lots of good history and info. ------------------ |

John, we have one of the best chapters here in IN/KY, the great thing is a lot of people in the VCA know most of the history of many Vipers in area,,, please post price range, colour, GTS or RT10 and miles you would like to stay with,,, the nice deal about getting a local car most of them never see bad winter weather unless they are from New Castle, IN, most Viper people know if its been raced. |

Thanks for all the reply's. Really appreciate it. When I get serious, I'll post that information. I have been checking out the Viper Club pages as well. Just seemed like almost all of them had Warranty rebuilds etc. Regards< John ------------------ 2001 Orange, Mopar Exhaust, MTD Intake, Front and Rear Mud Flaps, Chrome Shimmers, Orange Prowler Logo Valve Caps, Ceramic Brake Pads, Prowleronline.com License Bracket, Eric Wolf Chrome Trans Cover, Mopar Hitch and Trailer. |

GaryC....I have to admit to having a couple of Vipers in snow, but not often, they drag too bad on the drifts ....the early side pipe cars are GREAT snow blowers....I really did use the cars for leaf blowers in my driveway in the fall....far more efficient then the Sears model...a few passes up and down the driveway and the leaves were about a block away, and I was listening to a CD with the A/C on ...true story... |
