Help! I know that there are a lot of successful and creative people on this site and I am seeking employment, investment, franchise, home business, and or schooling and training income producing ideas.

After 19 years with the same high-tech company my job was eliminated a few months back due to a down turn in the semiconductor business. I was an "inventory specialist", a warehouse stockroom type position with customer service, people, and general computer type skills, having worked my way up to $40K a year.

I have applied for NAFTA benefits and can go to school but time is running out on using those. I have about 30 more days to have an action plan in a growth industry to use it or loose it. Unemployment benefits are running out in about four months as will. I get an extension only if I am going to school. If I do go to school I need something that doesn't take forever to train for. A year or less would be ideal.

I am 52, recently married (less than 2 years), just purchased a new home a couple of months ago,( I'm located in Vancouver, Washington and am not looking to relocate),and my Prowler is paid for. My hobby and love is cool cars.

Unemployment here is high and most everything available is paying $10.00 hr. or less. Choke, choke! I would prefer to go back to work instead of school but wouldn't mind training for a new career if I had a firm direction.

I have enough stuff to start a home business if there was something that really was proven and works. I am trying to think outside the box and would really like to work for myself instead of the other guy.

So I was thinking what a creative bunch of nice and funny people we have here and ask for you input. I am seriously looking for an income producing idea, a possible small investment, or something that could work out for me and I would greatly value your opinions.

Thanks, John C. (Prowlen)

If your handy and have some handyman skills you could buy small homes that banks foreclose on or ones that are for sale that need attention. You have to have an idea what their value is when they are fixed up and how much to do the fixing. If you do the work yourself you will make money. If you pay to have the work done make sure you get someone who is reliable and honest. You could buy 2 or 3 family homes cheap! fix them up and rent them. Many times one of the rents will cover your monthly costs. Real estate is a good investment if you do your research. I know a guy who buys tickets for face value and sells them for 2 or 3 times face value. He makes around $1000 a week doing it part time from his home. There are people on ebay who make 6 figure incomes buying products from china and selling them on ebay. lots of things you can do. My friend takes 2 trips yearly to southeast asia and buys fishing lures and equiptment which he sells for 5 times what he paid them. he just bought a new BMW. He can't be doing to bad. Get into something you like, and know something about! JMO

If you like software, buy a couple of programs like Access or VB6 and buy some books that have CD's choked full of example programs. From there, learn how to build a website.

If not your cup of tea, learn web graphic arts.

While alot of high dollar programming is going overseas, junior level jobs are out there. Seattle and Vancouver B.C. are hot spots for this so you are in luck there.

Programming should see $20/hr+ and slightly less for graphic arts.

Good Luck!!!

I had the same thing happen to me several years ago. I was a mechanical engineer for 30 some years. When you get some gray hair, no young kid manager will hire you because he know that you have more experience in your field than he does. Well, I started a machine shop out of my garage, trying to do prototype machine work. Well that fell on it's face. These companies out there want you to do 4 hours of proto work for $25.00 per part, NOT! Anyway I was searching for a position or job that was not to hard physically, that I could use my brain, that didn't require a lot of reeducation and paid well, a pretty tall order! Well I found it and it's Real Estate Appraisals!!!!
I went to a tech school in Denver for 2 weeks and then took the state exam and passed. There are schools all over the country, look it up under "real estate schools". The hard part of this profession is that you must find a local appraiser to apprentice under. For the first 2000 hour don't expect to make any money, because you will give 1/2 or more of the fee for the appraisal to your mentor, until you can get your 2000 hours in and take your exam. Then you can go do it on your own and make $500-$1000 per day if you hussle. Just an idea, good luck!

An appraiser can make $260-300K a year? Are you sure of that? Maybe if they are mentoring 75 folks at the same time perhaps.

Just seems way too high, IMO.
