I just got gas for $ 1.54 for 87 octane this evening. Some are as high as $ 1.77 for 87. It changes daily here. If you look around you can usually find some a little cheaper than the average. It goes up every Thursday for the week-end and then drops on Monday, usually.

The lowest price this week in Denver is $1.42 a gallon at Safeway.Look for the lowest price in Denver area this summer to reach $2.50 a gallon and perhaps peak Memorial day at about $3.00 a gallon. Who knows what the cost will be at tourist traps or in the Chicago/Midwest area where the Perier superblends are mandated? I understand Significant drivers to increased cost of imported oil is the decreasing value of the US dollar (US deficit?). Also, a new refinery hasn't been built in over 30 years. 25% of US refining capacity has been closed due to enviromental regulations and other issues since 1980. An addtionanl 10% of refining capacity is expected to close when the new EPA "clean fuels" low sulfur diesel reg drops in in June 2006. The refiners that do stay in business must invest huge (275 million at the Denver Refinery) amounts of capitol to meet new fuel sulfur standards and NOX and SOX emissions reductions. All this while CONSUMPTION is SOARING (never mind that proven world oil reserves are on the decline). Seewww...It looks like this may not be a price "spike" coming our way...but the way of the future??? JMO chromer.

Chromer - "CONSUMPTION is SOARING"Yes it is. Think of all the economic dollars we have pumped into China in the past 20 years. Their HUGE population use to get around on bicycles and mopeds but now the automobile population has also soared there,,,creating large needs for gas/oil. I agree that more refineries are needed, but government regulations are blocking the path of construction. The liberals cry for more government programs and regulations is going to put us in even a worse position,,,,the politicians control us. Whatever happened to government for the people, by the people? Long gone. JMO

$1.63 this morning for 87 octane. Varies from 1.63 to 1.77 and as Ed said, goes up on Thursday and drops on Monday a couple of pennies. I'm sure the gas companies are the ones broadcasting $3.00 a gallon so when it only goes to 2.50 they can say they kept the prices down. Such wonderful people those gougers are.

It jumps 25 cents a gallon here, every week and then drops back. It stays between $ 1.44 and 1.77 usually. It does not fluctuate by pennies.

Hey Alley Cat, where I live in Scottsdale, I paid $1.95 for unleaded. Jim said he drove around until he found $2.10, most other places it was higher in central Phoenix. This really ticks us off. I'd like to know what it is in Texas right now because they somehow are always cheaper than Arizona.

Cnote6MOM-I don't know if it's true in this case, but usually the different prices between states is due to state taxes. Also with Texas being home to many of the refineries, the pipeline transport costs are lower. The state taxes on gasoline in TX are historically some of the lowest in the country due to political pressure with it being an oil state. Here in North Carolina we have low cigarette taxes because much of the tobacco is grown, processed and cigs manufactured here. ------------------

Gary K - there is quite a story behind the 9/10ths of a cent issue,,,,,but I can't now recall how it was all started. Way back when, a bunch of old, rich dudes held a meeting and established the 9/10th deal. I'll agree,,,it's time for it to GO.
