....My first car was a '55 Chevy which I paid cold hard cash for...$600.....it was a kings ransom for a '55 Chevy in the summer of 1967, but the car was like brand new inside and out and had a lot of speed equipment.....I was making .65 cents per hour when I bought it....gas was approximately .30 cents per gallon and you could easily feed yourself and a cheap date for $1 at the drive-in....hamburgers were .15 cents or 7 for $1....cokes were .10 cents and fries were .20 cents.....local movie theater was .35 cents admission....
....My first car payment came the next spring when I bought a new '68 GTO....the car was low on options,no power assists of any kind... and I remember the MSRP was approximately $3600......not sure anymore how much I financed or how long the terms were, but my payment was $91 per month....by this time, mininum wage had kicked in and I was making $1.35 per hour...Steppenwolf was playing "Born To Be Wild" .....the Turtles were still "Happy Together"..........life was good

I bought a 48 Chev. for $ 85. No payments. License plates were $ 10, I think. Gas was probably 25 or 26 cents.

My first car was a '50 Olds with newly rebuilt V-8 engine and hydro transmission - $75.00. Wrecked that one, next was a family hand me down '49 Ford - $0. Blew the motor up on it. Next came a '55 Chev red 2-door HT with 270 Corvette engine - $500.00. Dam near lost my license street racing this one. A year out of high school, bought my first new car, 1965 Ford Galaxie coupe. I remember the payments were $57.00 a month, but I paid it off early.

Does "guys" include women? My very first car was a 1966 Maroon Chevy Malibu 2-dr. I paid $2,730 for the car and my car payments were $70 a month.

74 Super Bettle "Baja Edition". Car cost something like $2,300.00 (new).

10 months later I spent $500 to have bigger cylinders, high lift rocker arms, twin webers, power pulley, headers, hurst short throw shifter, different gears, fiberglass rear decklid, and a 3' long stinger tube.

Could pull wheelies with it and scratch the end of the stinger tube till I blew the engine.

Had to put a section of railroad tie in the trunk to keep front end on the road when not playing....gas was something like 45 cents in a small town.......

First car I paid for was a 56 English Ford...4 cylinder running on 3.Used to buy and carry oil by the gallon..shudda got paid for mosquito spraying cause it belched so much smoke. $200 and I worked it off pumping gas at the station I got it from. Floor was rusted out--The high-low beam flasher was on the floor(remember those?)--I remember hitting it one time and on through it went. Problem was I lost the ground when it did and the lights didn't work and it was night. Rode it for about a year and then sold it back to the guy for $100 after I had fixed most of the stuff that was falling off. Was good for hauling my Go-Kart around as it was a station wagon. 1968.

My first brand new car was an 67 Dodge Coronet R/T with a 440 Magnum 375 hp. Car payments were $50.00 a month. If I remember correctly the car cost me $3200. I was in Vietnam when I odered it and my father took delivery. It was waiting for me when I got home. The loan was in his name and title was in both his name and mine. When he passed away at the early age of 49 in May 1969, the lein was cleared by loan insurance and my mother sold me the car for $1 to get the title solely in my name.
On a side note when I traded it in 1972 for a Dodge Dart, the dealer low balled me on the trade in because he said he would have a hard time selling a muscle car. The car did not even sit on his lot 1 full day. Some guy bought it for his teenage son. A month later it was in the shop with a blown automatic transmission.

The very first car I got was a 1978 Ford Mustang(the only Ford I've ever owned). My parents'gift which was a big deal at a time because most of my friends(girls especially)were then hitching rides. All I can remember is that it lasted me right through University, put a load of miles on it and didn't really care much about the value and condition as time went on.

I might be able to find some old ads of ours from the 40's. A new Pontiac straight eight, if I remember right, was around $695 list price. That was in 46-47, I think. We were the only dealer in our town that would finance a car for people. Any of the other dealers had to have cash. Anyone that wanted to finance, had to go to the bank to get a loan. And the bankers didn't want the car for collateral. You had to mortgage your farm, home or cattle, hogs or crops. Most people just saved up till they could pay cash. Had one old guy come in with a bucket full of silver dollars to pay for his new Pontiac. I sure wish I had those now. We just took them to the bank and deposited them. That was late 40's- early 50's. Even back then I remember that there were some really old silver dollars, even for that era.

I got my 1st car when I was 15. It was a `67 Barracuda that needed some work, I paid $400 cash, already had a set of aluminum wheels and wide tires. Dad helped by paying $200 to have it painted (had been thru a fence)In the 1 1/2 years I put a 273 HIPO, 2 rear ends, a set of Cragers, 8-track Stereo, all kinds of shag carpet everywhere....LOL....traded it to a guy for a `69 Roadrunner

My 1st car I got a loan on was a `77 Dodge Aspen, LOADED TO THE GILLS, Base price was $3,500, List $6,900. If I remember correctly I paid about $6,300 financed $5,500 for 3 years and my payment was $173.40. I have never seen another one like it. 360 at, ac, power everything, T-Top, folding rear seat, buckets, console, Midnite blue with Black vinyl top. I added a rear spoiler off an R/T and as with my 1st car had a set of Aluminum slots before the car was delivered to the dealer and ended up with Crager S/S's when I sold it. The mag wheels and air shocks were on it the 2nd day I had it.

My first car that had a payment was a 1977 Chrysler Cordoba. Yea while everyone else was buying muscle cars I bought a "personal luxury" car. Within two years it had a .020" over 340 ci with Holley 780 modified, 727 torqueflite w/ hemi stall converter and shift kit into a rear from a 72 Chrysler Newport ( it was actually 2" shorter) with Scheaffer 4.30:1 Pro gears into BF Goodrich N50/15 TA Radials on Keystone Classics. My father could of killed me as he was still driving his 69 Fury III. One of a kind but blew away stock 383 Challengers in the 1/4. Fun while it lasted. I went fast in Corintian Leather. I think my payment was about $175.00

My first car was a 1951 Plymouth Club Coupe, which I still have. My Grandfather gave it to me when he quit driving so I had no payments there. The first car I bought was a 1971 Plymouth Duster 340. I paid $2945.00 for that car. I financed about half of that amount but I don't remember how much the payments were. My first date with my wife Brenda, was to go pick up that car.....seemed like a special first date thing to do at the time.

My first new car was a '71 Nova with "Rally" package, rear speaker, clock, and 3 speed on the floor as only options. It stickered for $2707.70 and I traded in a '64 Malibu for $700. I paid my parents $100.00 per month until the loan from my Dad's insurance was paid back.

Like CJ said if "guys" includes women my first new car I purchased was a 1972 VW Super Beetle for $2300 and my notes were about $90 a month. The salesman wanted to send me to a store called the "Sound Center" that someone by the name of JAY Harris owned for an "underdash 8-track" installation for $200 but I declined and settled for the factory AM/FM!! Who would know I would end up being married to him for the last 30 years!!

First car..I was 15 years old in 1968 and bought the car from a customer on my paper route. I didn't even have my license yet! He had it sitting in his drive way for a long time when I asked what he was doing with it. He told me it needed a clutch and he didn't want to fix it...and said..kid you want to buy it??? So I asked how much...he said $300! I went home and talked to my Mom and Dad and told them I wanted them to look at the car...I would replace the clutch with my paper route income..amd my Dad could drive it to work until I was 16. I had enough money saved in my bank account to buy the car. So we went to look at it and my Dad said it looked ok..only a small dent in the left rear quarter panel, but the clutch was so bad you could barely drive it! So I paid the guy and my dad managed to get it home...just barely as the clutch was really wiped out! So what kind of car was it you ask....a 1962 white Pontiac Catalina 2 dr hardtop with red vinyl interior..bench seat...389 TRI-POWER with 4 speed!! I spent $75 at an AAMCO transmission shop for a new clutch and pressure plate...and that car was a MONSTER! Talk about fast! Never had to put another dime in it and drove it until 1971 when my Dad signed for me to buy a used 1969 Charger with a 383 / 4 speed as a graduation present from high school. Yes he just signed...I paid for it...as I recall $1,900 from a Dodge dealer and payments were $70 / month. Drove that car only 1 year and then traded it for a 72 Dodge Demon 340, brand new at dealer out the door was $2,800 and payments were $105 / month for 3 years. Pulled out of the dealer and first stop was a Sunoco gas station, where I filled the tank with Sunoco 240 premium for 24 cents a gallon!....those were the days.....
