Just watched evening news. They predict gas to go to $3.00 a gallon this summer!!! Come on guys, who's kidding who? Man am I glad we sold our boat last summer. 40 footer, 300 gallon gas tank. Almost a grand to fill it up if gas goes that high. That Prowler is lookin' better and better.

Don't get me wrong. . .I'd like to see gas at 50 cents a gallon again, but when I read your post, it made me think for a minute. In 1971, I was paying about 35 cents for a gallon of gas and 35 cents for a pack of smokes. As a young GI, I was making about $145 a month. I bought a brand new Chevy Vega (don't laugh, it wasn't that bad) for $2300. Tricky Dick gave all us lowly GIs a big raise in '72, but that meant a monthly gross of about $250 -- with extra entitlements, I think I was making about $4K a year total. Thirty two years later, gas is going for (in this area) about $1.55-$1.60 a gallon, but a pack of butts goes for about $4-5 or more, a new car will run at least $20K and even lowly GIs make over $15K -- closer to $20K with entitlements (and not nearly enough considering what they are going through, but that's for another day). Like I said, I damn sure don't want the price to go up, but even at $3 a gallon, it's still a bargain compared to what it was when it was "cheap."

I agree it's still a bargain. We have been spoiled for a long time.

Remember when TV's were $ 500-600 for a 21 inch? Now you can buy them for $ 100.

..Any type of new technology seems to drop drastically in price as time passes. That's the only reverse inflation I ever see.The sad part is after the oil embargo in the early 70's, the auto industry knee jerked a reaction of better gas mileage, and tons of HP robbing pollution controls...Now we are back to V-10's and every DC product has a hemi in it anymore.....We are about to repeat history! Funny how 30 years later, we still can't come up with a better or even equivalent fuel source.

Isn't it amazing how oil companies conveniently raise the price of gas just before the Holidays,on friday of a long weekend, whenever there is reason to travel...

Our Gas price in Germany is way over 4 Dollar a gallon. I´´m still enyoing me Prowler and cruise with my 34 Ford BB-Street Rod. But my dayly to work driver is a new all aluminum Audi with diesel engine, tiptronic and loaded , that goes over 62miles with one gallon diesel. ( and still runs 120 Miles on the autobahn ). I´´m looking foreward to my USA vacation in March/April. Then I get a big smile at the gas station again when i fill up my rentle car. ( and a lot of other thinks from my shopping list that are a lot cheaper in the USA than here in Europe . )This message has been edited by condor on 01-15-2004 at 11:12 AM
