I heard this story on the national news tonight. Pontiac is bringing back the GTO in 2004! It will have a Vette 350 engine and transmission. From the outside, it doesn't look like much. There is no hood scoops. But it has the get up and do of the days past. Cost will be about $33K for a 4 speed manual. For an additional $695 you can get it in a 6 speed. Here are some sites I found online... http://www.supercars.net/cars/2004@$Pontiac@$GTOg.html http://www.motortrend.com/features/news/112_030623_pontiac/index.html http://www.pontiac.com/gto/index.jsp?version=html

idive,
Thats a Holden Monaro dressed up to be the new GTO. It's actually an Austrialian design. Check out www.holden.com Leave it to GM to be original. Put the steering wheel on the left and call it a new design.

I seen one this week at the car show. There was a PILOT sticker under the hood and written over the door label.

It did not impress me at all. bland interior, nothing that screams GTO.

they should have at least put a machined turned dash in it like the early GTO's

It really doesn't stand out from the Grand AM / Grand Prix

Yes, I seen part of the show tonight that stated it had the corvette drivetrain. I was driving a `95 Caddy Fleetwood yesterday with corvette engine........ZZZZZZZZZZZ

They drove a GTO onto the field at the Peach Bowl Friday night. A fellow had a chance to win it by throwing a football thru the window from 30 yards. Pontiac now has a GTO with a dent in the front fender; you might pick it up at a discount. LOL
It did sound good over the dome speaker system; I really don't see anything special about the design.

Alot of car rags reviewing it call it nothing more then a warmed over Cavalier.

I may have some engine but, on the road, it blends in with every other $12K econobox

65 GTO-my first car upon graduation from high school in 65....4 speed, trips, no brakes with 4 wheel drums --this looks like a ricer, and maybe by design to attract the younger gereration that goes for that stuff.

Was really excited to hear that they were bringing back the GTO until I saw it. They interviewed several old GTO owners and they were very upset with it. Said they couldn't believe they didn't bother to at least put in the hood scoops which were the one thing that made you know there was a GTO heading at you and made it stand out among the rest. Sounded pretty good on TV, but other than that it looks like every new car on the road. Very disappointed and for the pricing I'll definitely pick up another prowler. T

I have to agree with Chromer. just another ugly little car. Did anyone notice that the person who was in charge of the "come back " was a lady! I wonder, could that have anything to do with it?

Also saw it. Can't believe they are making it. The original GTO guys won't buy it and the young kids won't be interested either.

....Every red blooded kid in America wanted a GTO in the SIXTIES......my first new car, a 1968 GTO conv. 400/4 spd.... lasted me 10 months....I was 16 yrs old when I bought it....I pretty well raced it to death and ordered a new '1969 Chevelle conv. SS 396/375 4 spd to take its place.....the GTO was raced against ANYTHING or ANYBODY that had wheels....didn't win all the time, but it had a pretty fair win/loss ratio....the car was destroyed a few months after I traded it in....the new owner tore the GTO in half on a bridge abutment and spent the next nine months in the hospital.....
....the new GTO.....I would rather have a NEON SRT4...or just about ANYTHING else ...the GTO is lacking in the looks department BIG TIME....just another everyday commuter car....

I've seen a lot of ink with regard to the fact that the GTO doesn't even have a hood scoop! Lots of people complaining about it being sacrilege!! Compares to people complaining about the lack of power in the PT Cruisers. Lo and behold, DC finally put some power in the PT with the turbo. I'm sure that irritated those who bought the PT without and now they finally came out with the Turbo version.

I imagine there will be a lot of people who will run right out and buy the GTO because it's a GTO in spite of the perceived shortcomings.......wouldn't they be pissed if Pontiac decided to change the design next year to include a hood scoop?

remember the last Road Runners.....Volares......

the last couple of years of the GTO was nothing to get excited about either...

sometimes it is better to leave the legends alone....at least the PT didn't have a heritage to protect, it was new and will hopefully improve with age.......

Think aftermarket companies if enough folks buy one. I seriously doubt it will be a big seller. Alot of folks in here have owned the old one and none seem to keen on getting this one just because of the name.

I agree with others, I'd get the SRT-Neon in bright yellow.

I'm tired of manufacturers jamming more HP in a bland pre-existing body design, as if it's going to make up for the lack of imagination. They took the blah Holden Monaro and souped it up. And of course Australia is known for it's high mark of automotive quality.

Nothing looks as hot as the Prowler, and I would have bought it even if there were just a hamster under the hood powering it!!

I can't give enough credit to Chrysler for designing the ultimate modern hot rod. They got every design cue PERFECT! I look at Chip Foose customs and Coddingtons, and while they are in their own stratosphere, I can feel good that I have something very close to that WITH a factory warranty and gobs of money leftover!
