If you notice, many of the spam e-mails that you receive, do not have your exact e-mail listed. They use a shot-gun type of method to send everyone hit or miss spam. |

You know I am not so sure when I think about it, I am using a personal domain so its not like it @yahoo or @aol and its starting to get worse. Do any others on here have an email address that is used only for the prowler and have yoiu started or been receiving spam on that email address? |

VIRUSES: After I joined this club, I started receiving emails with viruses from other members who have my email address in their address book. SPAM: Once your email address in one SPAM list, it will spread like wildfire to other SPAM lists. There are many ways you could get your email address into a SPAM list. If your email address is posted anywhere on the internet (like on this website), then it is a potential target. Also, a company may sell their email lists (including your email address - if they have it) to other companies. To protect against spreading of email addresses and hence viruses and SPAM, I do this: If I am emailing several people with the same message, then I place their addresses in the "BC" (blind copy) email field instead of the "TO" field. This prevents the recipient computers from accessing all of the other email addresses. |

I don't keep an email address book! No problems here! I have all email addresses written on paper & just type them in! No spam ! |

quote: If this is a response to my post, I think you're confusing viruses with spam. The email address book is what many Microsoft viruses use to mass-mail themselves. Spam is sending unwanted advertising to a list of email addresses. Think of it as the old "mailing lists" on speed. My point was, just by going to the member registry, your Email address is shown along with most others as larryxx@rolarproducts.com. In all of 5 minutes, a marketer (spammer) can collect a couple of thousand valid email addresses (which should be highly desirable to spammers given the profile of the average prowler owner). And, yes, I do the same as you and never use any address books - yet I have received spam (and virus attempts) that originated through my association with POA. Anyone who registers an Email address should be aware of what it is being used for, the risks, and take appropriate cautions. -GRROWL |

quote: That practice can help to keep viruses from going out from your PC, but does not stop them from coming into your PC. If the incoming virus never executes, then it doesn't matter where you keep your addresses. If you are in the habit of regularly running viruses on your PC, then I appreciate you keeping email addresses off-line, away from any running virus. The only way to prevent SPAM is to not give your email address to any group, club, or business. A few viruses hack their way into your PC no matter what you do. The only protection from these is to change over to a non-compromized operating system (like Linux), or regularly scan your PC with virus detection s/w. |

When you say you do not use an address book, do you mean you delete the addresses every day? I don't put anthing into the address book, but every incoming email must go in there automatically because I have a ton of them in my address book. Most of them are not people I send emails to except dealing with eBay transactions, once or twice. I do not know the answer. This is a legit question. |

Did anybody else receive this? My guess is that the most likely source is the POA member list. Just wondering. Hi all, There is not much you can do to stop SPAM as it is now estimated that over half of all Internet Email traffic is SPAM and its growth rate has more then doubled over the past year. Also, the SPAMMER has tools that can scan Internet web sites and gather email address information without human intervention. So they can gather hundreds of email addresses in less then a half hour. The only advice I can add to what has already been said is the following: Never reply to or click on any link within a SPAM email, including the so called "remove form list" links. If you are using AOL, EarthLink, Yahoo, or Hotmail you have SPAM filtering available to you that you can adjust to your needs. If your email is coming from a private domain or other ISP then listed above, you can purchase third party software that can filter out a good amount of SPAM from your Inbox. Finally, on the Virus subject you should have a name brand anti-virus scanner that scans you email inbox as well as your hard drive and is keep up today date with the latest definitions from the vendor. The most important thing to remember that there are new definitions released daily and if your software is not up to date then you might as well not run it at all. On a separate note to the comment about Linux be a “non-compromised operating system” this is no longer true as there are now many vulnerabilities to this operating system and is now susceptible to viruses, not as much as Microsoft products. ------------------ |
