Gary I own the nikko viper GTS/R.I have extra parts for it too.I run on 3 spoke HPI rims and tayanama slicks.I got a couple diffrent bodies.GTS/R,sallen S281,integra type R,Nissan Skyline GTR,and Mercades CLK GTR. The skyline I still have to paint. The integra is my most strangest body. Most of the time it crashes and does huge flips. One time it did 3 flips on the nose of the car, landed on all 4 but riped off the right rear tire right off the car and was riding the rim.The wing is a bit damadged too. ------------------ |

The nice thing about RC you haul butt, no tickets, driving drunk doesn't matter and you can park 10000 in a single car garage. And the driver never gets hurt,,,,,,,,, |

This thread couldn't be more timely...my 13 year old has found a new big-bucks toy to possess this Xmas. He is looking at the Traxxas Nitro Rustler at about $300. I see it goes 51.8 mph, according to their ad. This makes it both faster and more expensive than my first car, so I have a coupleof questions: 1. Is this a good starter car? 2. Is it a versative platform for him to play with later? 3. Is this a good price? 4. Any other tips are appreciated. And where in Los Angeles do you race one of these things at 51 mph? |

Great links, Gary - thanks!! But it's tough to get objective info from their threads - or from the hobby magazines, for that matter...who's gonna slam their advertisers' products?? Is this a good toy for a 1st timer - 13 yrs old? And how techinical are these things? Can a dad with virtually no mechanical aptitude and no knowledge or experience with small engines (or big ones, for that matter!!) keep one of these things running satisfactorily?? Or am I gonna need to hire a pit crew of 16 year olds with dirty fingernails to keep it tuned and happy? Inquiring minds want the straight poop on this stuff!!! |

If it was his first RC I would do an electric deal to get a feel for the car or truck, I would do an electric off road car, that's where I started, 20 to 30 on a track is FAST, a 50 mph nitro truck is dangerous, get him a RTR(ready to run) Losi or Associated off road electric car, when I started the Nitro deal about 15 years ago I popped(destroyed) 12 motors in 17 days, With an electric deal buy three battery packs, one to run, one cooling, one charging. Get the good stuff, there is a difference. and less maintenance FOR YOU, Don't run battery packs back to back you will kill the motor. Why a car, stronger and less work for you. Especially electric. If you need any more advice you can call me, 317 877 5551, don't call late please, I am 3 hours ahead of you. Trust me, he will grow into the Nitro deal, but its a ton of work, a huge ton, many tons of work. |

Gary, that's what I was afraid to hear, but suspected. Unfortunately, he is obsessed with getting a nitro engine...probably a by-product of taking him to the NHRA drags twice a year. I suggested electric for all of the same reasons, but was promptly informed that I was the most ignorant Dad in the universe, and that his life would be ruined forever if he had to toodle around the track in an electric car. Of course, I suspect my life will be ruined if I have to constantly shell out for new motors and bits, and end up spending my weeknights at the kitchen table diddling with some tiny little engine I can't understand (or even see clearly, with my eyesight!!) I appreciate your advice - I know it is sound, but I suspect he has already manipulated Mom into backing his big "nitro" play, so I'm probably swimming upstream here. Of course, Mom hasn't heard one of these light up yet, and that will be a hair-raising surprise, I am sure - they look to be pretty loud, unless that's a muffler I see, and not an expansion pipe... |

Thay are very loud and a extremely messy, the neighbor better have thick skin and you too, tell mom she is in a new world out there.
tell him a Nitro car is like a top fueler, anyone can be fast,,,,,and electrics are like prostocks,,,hard and a lot of work to be fast. |

No, no driving other than small scale slot cars. But he's 13, and 13 year olds can do anything - just ask one!!! I noticed in one of your links that there is a track not too far from where we live, unfortunately in one of the most desperately dangerous parts of L.A. there could possibly be (Compton, for God's sakes - I'll have to take a cop buddy with us or something!!!!). However, I think it will be very instructional for me, Mom and lead-footed, gear-head son to check it out - I know that 10 minutes of that drone will go right through Mom's head like an ice pick, on top of the oily nitro fumes. He thinks he's gonna race it on vacant lots and in parking lots, but he doesn't understand that he'll only be able to use each lot once, until the neighbors get him tossed out because of the noise!!! I see a Xmas meltdown coming....I liked it better when all they wanted was Barbie dolls, cap guns and a pony!! |

OK, have some extra glug plugs, break in the motor carefully, very carefully needs to smoke all the time, run 15% Nitro, I think the Max trax is the best one, realiable, dont get a pull start deal, go to Hobby town, they know what to do,,,,,,,, get a FM Radio not AM, better range, hope you don't have a run away, at 50 they will destroy themselves. Good Luck Hope I have been a help Gary PS, Start Meds now, they take a while to work..... |

Gary C., thank you very much for your advice. Rather than try to persuade, I just told him tgo log on and read this thread. We have decided to go with an electric car to start with - a Traxxas Rustler with a 20 turn motor, electronic speed control, etc. What is the best fast charger out there that we can plug into a 12 volt cigarette lighter in the car? Any other tips or advice now that he's decided to go electric???? What else do I need to get at the hobby store to be "turn-key" on this?? |

Thanks God, seriously, electric is the way to go for everyone under your roof, you have a very wise son(times like these I wish I had children) OK, Chargers don't have a clue, they will know.... they should have one for battery off car and 110v Charging is very important... read the instructions and they will know... I personally would have at least 3 packs batteries, one running, one cooling and one charging, again I will say you still can kill a motor quickly by running back to back battery packs. let the motor cool down. If the car gets stuck or bogged down you can hurt the electronic speed control quickly. Never run the battery completely dead in the car, you'll hurt the speed control. Get a battery Discharger, keeps the batteries preserved so to speak. Also ask what parts break first on the car you get, get some spares but get the souped(trick) up parts which they should have in stock. SO, I hope I have helped, If there is anyone else that wants to jump in please do. FM Radio When you go I personally would shop at a quiet time at the store so you will get the best attention. I always go in a half an hour before closing. Weekday. ONE MORE THING< IF HE DRIVES IT IN WATER HE WILL HEAR FROM ME. Sounds like you are going to have a very Nice race truck there so please respect it. Have a good time, I hope I have helped a little GC ------------------ contact Bill Pemberton at Woodhouse |
