I've been thinking about painting my bumpers for some time now and finally went out and met with a highly recommended painter today. I got a price that I thought was very reasonable ($300 for both sets of bumpers and the rear mud flaps).

The painter says he stains the bumpers first as this seals the plastic and makes the paint adhere better. Then 1 or 2 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear. That sound good or should I get additional coats of paint or clear? For those of you who have painted bumpers, how many coats of paint and how many coats of clear did you use?

I think I need to move to Florida with paint prices like that.

Bob - maybe you can send all your paint work there. That price sounds VERY good for four bumpers and the rear flaps. That many coats of paint and clear sounds right but I don't have painted bumpers to compare it to.

It cost me $250 to paint my rear bumpers and upper rad support when my cat was in for other paint work. Not sure how much clear was applied. Guess it's who you know.It seems some vendors take pride in working on a specialty car like ours. The name of the paint shop is "Viper Collision" and they're into Mopars.

Rick.

That is a good price and the paint process is similiar to process used here in Louisiana... although not sure about double coats may have used one primer than one base.... The bumper is sprayed with some sort of prep product before the primer as you mentioned.

I had my Bumpers Painted (Rears) on both my kats! My painter said he had to add some type of additive so the paint stayed flexible. I'm not sure how many coats etc. Is the price of $300 with you removing the Bumpers?? That seems like a very good price if all he has to do is supply the paint and no installation is required. My body shop is very good and i don't even bother to ask alot of questions. They know i want things done right and its just a given. I would leave the fronts off and install the Tom Mills Kit or Gary's relo light kit. I did both my Candy and Mulholland and now i think the front bumpers are ugly. I would do the rears they look sharp painted. Good luck

I paid $400 for all 4 including removal and replace and felt I got a very good deal.

Thanks for all the comments.

The $300 includes taking the bumpers off, painting them and putting them back on. It is another $50 to take off the rear mud flaps, paint them and put them back on. Total cost is $350. Well worth it. I just wasn't sure how many coats of paint were required. I feel better after everyones comments.

CT -- I like the looks with or without the front bumpers but better with them painted so I plan on leaving them all on for now.

Rick, I had all four of my bumpers done for $ 200 plus I paid $ 50 for another guy to highlight the Plymouth and Prowler. (This was before Shimmers were invented, by the way). The painter said they were somewhat of a pain to paint and I think they charged Richard almost that much just for the front bumpers at the same place. His were done this Spring. Mine were done at least 3 years ago.
The thicker the paint, the easier it is to chip, was what I was told by Tom Mills. You only have to make sure the surface is totally covered. Anything after that must be overkill and actually makes it easier to chip.
Tom, correct me if I am misquoting you.
