Right now we have AOL dial up, don't laugh we are behind the times. We saw an ad on tv for NetZero high speed internet and wanted to know if anyone has this and/or what you think about it or if someone can recommend one to us. We tried AOL Broadband but won't reach our house. We don't want to lose our AOL account, but NetZero sounded great for $15/mo extra just not sure if it is any good. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Why don't you want to lose your AOL account? AOL is pathetic, in my opinion.

Little Christopher - you can drop AOL and still have aol IM feature. Email account was easy to use with AOL, but I have adjusted and think broadband cable modem is 1000 times better than my old aol dial-up.

High speed internet is great - but get a hardware firewall - lots of hackers out there now.

Chris:

I switched to high speed cable about a year ago.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

After deducting the phone line charge and ISP charge my net is about $13 more a month and the ease and speed are well worth it. Also, in my market the cable has MUCH less downtime than the phone line.

I use Time Warner for TVs and internet at both my office and home. I'm in the process of moving and the kids and the W have asked that high speed cable be a high priority.

High speed is the only way to go. We have had high speed of one form or another for 5 years or so.
Had DSL, then we moved to the sticks (no DSL) and now we use a two-way satellite system.

A lot of ISPs will let you keep your AOL connection, however you will be billed by both services.

Firewalls are a must, I learned that the hard way.

Just shop around until you find one that will work with your existing service, I my opinion it is better than having 2 accounts.

Chris, I have a cable modem but I kept my AOL account also using the "bring your own connection" faeture for $14.95.
There are some features I like on AOL as well, so I kept it. Don't pay any attention to Ed, two years ago he couldn't even spell "computer".

I've had cable and DSL. Both are lightning fast. Only issue with cable is that it can slow down if you and lots of your neighbors all have it. DSL doesn't have that problem.

Either way, your internet connection will now always be ON so DO get some firewall protection and anti-virus software.

Norton and McAfee are the two big anti-software companies. Both can be configured to get the latest virus protection files from their respective web sites every night. You can also schedule virus scans (I schedule both the update and scan for in the middle of the night, every night, on both my work and home machines).

Zone Labs offers FREE fire wall software called Zone Alarm at their website zonelabs.com .

I have never used AOHell, but there are lots of other instant messengers out there; Microsoft (MSN), Yahoo, Sametime, ICQ. I use all of those except Yahoo.

Mike

Chris,
If you read the fine print at the bottom of the ad, it says it doesn't actually increase speed. I'm pretty sure what it does is remember pages you frequent and is able to bring them up faster. I just got DSL, highspeed is awesome.

Cable modem or DSL the only way to go, I belive AOL offering a DSL connection in certain area check with them, firewall are important you can get Linksys router mod BEFSR41 ver. 2 for less than $40.00 it work great.
