...This old guy was born many years ago in the hills of Kentucky, his large family living a meager existence...as a young man, the biggest job opportunity in life was WW II.....he was married during the war, eventually had 3 daughters and returned to civilian life a true hero and a recipient of the Bronze Star....He spent the rest of his life working as a crane operator which took him all over the country for long stretches of time....He finally retired several years ago, got bored and went back to work again, he just retired again at the age of 80 due to health problems.... ....his family was a neighbor of my family when I was a kid, I eventually stole his youngest daughter from him in 1971.....he never talked to anyone much thru the years, and had a reputation of being a quiet loner......while talking to different family members the last few days I realized I wasn't the only person he didn't talk to, he just didn't talk to anyone...no one in the family really knew much about what he did, what he felt, what he wanted in life, he either worked or slept.....he had no hobbies, just provided for his family....no one in the family realized he was a war hero, he just never mentioned it, just something he did, no big deal.... .......a few years ago I showed up at his house driving a new Viper which I was quite proud of, he came out to the drive way to look at it and in his typical fashion, looked at the car from one end to the other and finally asked "why did you pay so much for a car that didn't even have door handles ??? " He always drove a practical car, never anything sporty....he owned a Hudson when I was a kid, traded for a Corvair, a couple of Chevy Impalas and for the last few decades a string of brown Buicks which I always razzed him about.....I always told him if he ever saw me driving a brown Buick, just shoot me, because it meant life was over.....we laughed alot about Buicks and Prowlers....He never wanted to ride in any of my Vipers or Prowlers, but he did always step outside to see them take off down the highway.....as I would back out of the drive he would just stand there shaking his head and smiling..... ....I wonder about the 5 men he saved in the war, where are they, WHO are they.....do they have families, all these people wouldn't even exist except for the extreme bravery of this one old guy....do they have extended families like he did...lots of kids around the house..... .........looking at the pictures at the funeral yesterday, I saw the face of a young guy I never knew, he even smiled back then.....saw him raising his 3 girls and the look of happiness on his face all people experience with their kids....saw pictures of him with his grand kids, great grand kids, weddings, all the happy events in life..... .......returning from the Smokies last week we had plans to attend the Auburn Parade, but our plans changed the minute we returned home and found out this old guy was living out his last few days....none of his many ailments really killed him, he was just tired and went to sleep....yesterday the funeral and the slow, soft parade to the final rest....thank you old buddy for my family, my kids, grand kids....none of them possible without you..... tangled - A great tribute to a great man. Reminds me of a man I know,,,,,,,,maybe today I should stop out at the cemetary and thank him again for my life. |

Larry - Carol & I offer our deepest sympathy to Deddie & you. As we read you letter. not noticeing it was from you, we both though how great a man such as her father must have been and wish we could have known him, but through your love and true words I think we did.
