There was some gouging after the blackout and it seems as tho the rest of the country has followed suit. Of course, the same companies doing the gouging sell gas across the country... Every time OPEC "passes gas", they pull this stunt right away. But when there is an abundance of gas, prices don't drop equally as fast. Its no different here. Isn't it interesting that Congress doesn't step in til it gets WAY out of hand? And isn't it interesting that when Congress begins to talk about investigating the gouging, the prices drop again, so Congress does nothing at all about the gouging that took place? Think about it. They are already talking about how ALL of us are going to have to pay for the nationwide upgrades that are needed to prevent blackouts in the future. Be ready to hear about a rise in the cost of heating oil this winter again, along with another hike in the price of gas.

If there is any gouging going on I promise you it isn't at the distributor or retailer levels.

I'm a Citgo/Exxon/BP distributor and our costs have risen approximately 15 cents in the last 10 days and most of the terminals in the Mid-Atlantic states have had severe outages.

All of you may want to kill me for stating the truth, but most people don't want exploration off the coasts or wilderness areas, they want gas formulated with less emissions, for refineries to be pollution free, to not expand pipelines/terminals (not in my backyard) while driving more miles per capita. Can't get permits to expand the 70s infrastucture to handle demands of today's marketplace. Any disruption in the distribution chain causes price spikes. Disruptions with the Northeast power outage, pipeline shutdown in the Southwest and change from summer RVP gas to Fall RVP gas biggest causes of this recent spike.

There is oil to be had without drilling in our national preserves. Right in my "backyard" in fact. Twice now, two separate companies have leased my grandfather's farmland *that I have mineral rights to* and have yet to drill for it in the past 20 years. The fact that its 2 different companies, and the fact that both spent the moneies to lease it to drill is a pretty good indicator that they feel there is oil down there on those 749 acres. I'm sure its not the only place they can drill besides in our most pristine areas. I WISH they would drill on the farm.

You're right. There are plenty of places to drill, but can they? Seems like in your case they can. It's probably just a case of the price of crude. $30 USE TO BE the bencemark for profitability for drilling for heavy crude which I understand is the type of oil in the Southwest and some parts of the Gulf.

I have been told that there are cracks in the ocean floor in the Gulf that leach oil.

Our laid-in cost for Exxon regular (87 octane) unleaded today is $1.5845 and retail ranges from $1.599 to $1.659.
Federal & state taxes plus inspection fees are a total of $.4285 in NC.

Well in Pa the Land of TAXES and rising fuel prices, reg $1.68, 89 oct $1.79 , 93 oct $ 1.95 and they will be rising to $2.00 or more by Friday being Laborday weekend. These prices remind me of the seventies and the rip off then and still going on today.Gas is purchased in volume when oil prices are low than prices go up for profit, unless they the Companies have to buy when oil prices are high than as usual the price climb again and it passed on to the consumer. But the Companies still win !!!!!!

I'm sorry to report that it's us fools in Arizona causing the gas prices to rise

August 8, 2003 - gas was 1.41 gal
August 11, 2003 - 1.89 gal
August 18, 2003 - 2.25 to 3.79 gal,,,if you could find gas

Arizona had a pipeline break between Tucson and Phx on Aug 8th. We were OUT OF GAS for many days, and people were going crazy paying any price if they could find gas to buy. The rest of the country is seeing that we morons out here are willing to pay any price if they tell us there is a shortage or lack of supply.

August 25th - has stablized to $2.00 to 2.29,,,,Can you spell gouge? No relief in sight

Sorry
