We plan to buy a GMC Sierra SLT with Duramag Diesel engine. We still have a bad test on one of the GM diesel we used to own it in the past, so we want someone who have this Duramag diesel tell us more about this engine please. |

Make sure you plug it in on those cold nights and run fuel anti gel additive in the winter... and warm it up for a minute or 2.... I always get fresh fuel at a truck stop and not at the corner gas station. ------------------ |

Gary C, I'd like to know your references to head and tranny problems on these trucks. Everything negative I've heard about them has been "friend of a friend..." type reports, usually started by a Ford (PowerStroke) or Dodge (Cummins) owner. Do you have any personal experience with one? I recently sold an 01 Silverado 2500HD with Duramax and Allison. Best truck I've ever owned, bar none! Absolutely no problems with the engine or transmission. This included towing a 7500 lb "toy hauler" trailer in the summer and a 6000 lb enclosed snowmobile trailer in the winter. A good source of information about these trucks can be found at http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi As far as plugging it in, I don't know that it's that big of a deal. I had my truck to Togwotee, WY (near Jackson Hole) in January for 5 nights reaching 20 below. (Great place to go snowmobiling but that's another story.) When we left, the truck started first try. When it gets cold (below 0), you may want to cycle the key a couple of times (wait for the wait-to-start light to go off, turn off the key, turn it back on, wait again and then start.) I believe this is explained in the owners manual. The biggest benefit of plugging in is how fast you'll get heat from the heater. When plugged in, its almost immediate. Without, you may drive 5 - 10 miles before things warm up. I NEVER warmed mine up for any length of time. Start, wait for oil-pressure to build and drive (easily) until warm. The advice about good fuel is important. Buying it from someplace that goes through a lot of it (truck stops, ...) is good. Usually, these places sell fuel blended for the temperatues expected at their location. The anti-gel won't hurt either. BTW: I no longer had a need for a 4-door long box pickup (which my truck was) and I traded it for something smaller (Tahoe) a couple months ago. This was after 30,000 trouble free miles. |

On my second Chevy truck with the Duramax, not a single problem out of either. My current truck is a crew cab short bed 4x4. Just added the Banks engineering exhaust (a little higher than some of the others but worth it) and after a couple hundred miles I had a friend compare it to his stock Duramax pickup. We were both impressed with the gains in low end torque. ------------------ |

Well, the info was from the Diesel Dynamics which pumps up(HP) the Fords, Chevys and Dodge Diesels. They got one of the first ones (Duramax) in Vegas, the tranny took a dump and had a head gasket problem also before they did any mods to the truck, after the fixes they had no problems. The fuel additive really helped fuel mileage for me about 8%... and less smoke. BTW, my Dodge makes 480 hp and 954 TQ, it's my hotrod and love it. Gary

I have been look on the net, how ever I did not find any problems on GMC Duramax or Dodge with Cummins engine except Ford with 7.2? they having engine problems and Ford going to put a recall on those engines. I did not like Dodge because it has inline 6 and did not run smooth as Duramax V 8 engine I belive this engine designed by GM and made by Isuzu in Japan. I will go get one GMC with Duramax Diesel tomorrow, the one I have in mind is SLT, Crew Cab with XM Radio, I need it because my wife cannot ride on my KAT it is to rough for her neck so I will use this Duramax for pulling my KAT around. |

DRfoster, Yes I know how cold are in the winter here, I live about 3 hours from Jackson Hole, WY. I remember in 1978 I had a Plymouth Trail Duster with 400 engine, it was parked outside the wind was blowing hard temp. dropped to 28 below In early morning I went out try to start up my 4X4, the engine would not turn so I called AAA they came over, pulled out my dip stick show me the oil which was very thick like a gel, so he did heat up the crank case for a while and used WD 40 pray on my carburetor to get my 4X4 started. On that afternoon I have a block heater installed. |
