Hey,
I hear on the news you east coasters are having rampant power blackouts today. Who do you think you are stealing yet another California innovation. Just remember it happened here first. Find something else to do for fun will ya? LOL

My Power went out at 4:00 Pm. It came back on at 1:15 Am. My house is starting to cool off again, fridge is running, every light in the house was on so i had to turn them off, TV's. My electric bill this month was $465.00 I wonder why? with 3 kids home from school watching TV using their computers? I'll pay the bill this month and be glad i have electricity.

My power went off at 3:15 and came on at 10:45. As a result the pumps that keep the water tower full went out and we were without water for a while until the emergency power kicked in. Makes you realize how lucky we are to be able to flick a switch or turn a tap and get lights and water. It also make me realize how susceptible we are to terrorist attacks that could take out the nation by hitting the power grid.If they weren't aware of it before, they are now. I'm shopping for an emergency generator!

Spoke to Bob and CJ this morning and they assured me they are fine. The are running a generator and have limited hot water and plenty of cold beer. Sounds like that about covers it to me.
Also mentioned Dream Cruise is shut down unless power comes back on which they are thinking won't be until Sunday.
Bob, make sure you don't run out of gas or you'll have to drink your beer warm.

Power is up for the most part for the 12 million people in Ontario. While it is obviously inconvenient, people responded very well with virtually no looting and overall calmness (even those walking down the stairs in front of me last night from my office on the 45th floor).

I'm happy to hear that power is coming back up and people affected remained calm throughout.

Sounds like there is still a ways to go for normalcy, but it will soon be just a distant memory.

In Cincinnati there were near riot conditions. It had nothing to do with the power outage. The REDS beat the Arizona Diamondbacks after 16 or 17 straight losses to them over the past couple of seasons. The locals went nuts. lol

Yeah, you don't ealize how much you depend on power until you are without it. We will lose it once or twice each winter in North Carolina with ice storms and about every other May with a hurricane.

Glad to hear everyone's power is back up.

Meancat,

There are some companies that have their act together and make functional fuel cells sized for a single family home. There is also alot of inaccurate information being promoted by some companies on what their products can do.

IMO the main problem with any of us installing a fuel cell at our home is that there is a lack of fuel cell codes and standards to guide the permitting process within your local jurisdiction. There is an installation standard published by NFPA (NFPA 853) which I helped to revise for 2003, but it is not any use unless your local jurisdiction adopts it, and if you want to sell your excess power back to the electric company (called net-metering)you are really opening a can of worms... They will bog you down in their process and paperwork for many months and drive your installation cost way up. If you decide to disconnect from the electric grid instead some electric companies want to charge you a huge disconnection fee. There is hope on the horizon though since some new laws will come into play and force a streamlining of the process.

The last time there was a blackout,I believe someone mentioned 1966(way before my time...).
This was pretty amazing to see people lining up for gas, public tansit out of commission etc.
I've never seen so many bright stars standing in the middle of downtown Toronto in complete darkness.
Few gas stations that got power quickly were charging 99.9 cents a litre(ridiculous or what...).For most part, good Samaritans came out in large numbers and made it a pretty painless few days and nights!
