My sister has been selling on Ebay for several years and has a great feedback record - over 2100 with not one single negative feedback. Monday night a gentleman (and I use that term loosely) hacked into Ebay around 3:00 a.m., took over her Ebay user name, changed her password and put up ads for several $15,000 harleys he was selling for $7,000. Luckily a couple of her regular customers from here in Texas figured it out during the day on Tuesday and when they couldn't get in touch with her called our house since she and I have a link on her site to go to our site with our Dallas Stars' logo neons (since we have a trademark license to produce Dallas Stars' items). My daughter Jamie gave them her cell number and they got in touch with her. This guy was able to get her American Express number from her account also and used it to charge up over $6,000 on one purchase. American Express figured that one out and stopped the payment from going through and called her. He has opened up another e-mail address using her screen name and real name on verizonmail.com and she can't get it shut down. This guy is contacting all of her customers saying he is her from Ebay and is causing all sorts of headaches for her. One of her customers forwarded an e-mail they got from him that includes his phone number. Her customer is trying to help her catch the guy, but his phone number is in Europe of all places. She can't do anything locally with the police since he hasn't actually made a theft since American Express was able to shut him down before the funds cleared. What she has found out is that Ebay is essentially an "open" site and anyone with good hacking abilities can get any information from your accounts, including checking account numbers and credit cards. So, if you have an account watch it closely - apparently they are looking for accounts with very good feedback and people with alot of items for sale in hopes that theirs blend in. Somehow I guess this idiot figured she wouldn't see harleys listed in with her oil and gas collectibles. He set themup as 3 day auctions in hopes that he would get his funds before he was caught. The same thing happened to a couple of people I know. They have sent me scam spams including a "pop up" that says I did not pay for a baseball card and if you get three of them you will be indefinitely suspended. If you respond to their email they have your email link and can follow it backwards.
I have notified eBay but they cannot divulge any progress on their end since it is confidential. Unreal!! The crooks have privacy rights while they try to steal everyone blind.
The fake messages look very real. They also want to know your password to update your account. eBay never asks for your password. That is another way they steal your identity.
I have been checking my eBay to make sure I am not selling anything that I don't know about.
