I was looking at Family 2 way radios today and they have some that have a range up to 5 miles and some up to a range of 7 miles. Both say the need an FCC license. Can someone give me the details on FCC licenses for the radios, how to get one, fees involved, etc. Will these radios talk to the radios with a 2 mile range that most of us already use? What is the best brand, Audiovox, Motorola, Cobra, Midland or ?????. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Our old radios were not working all that well when we used them last at Prowlin the Falls and we ae looking to replace and/or upgrade before the Smokies. I just returned a pair of supposed "5-mile-range" FCC licensed required Motorolas to Costco with the complaint that they couldn't even do 1/2 mile. If you want to try a pair, channels 1-7 and then, I think, 12 and up are 1 watt transmissions. Channels 8-12 were .5 watt and more in line with what the conventional FRS radios are capable of. I sure hope I didn't use them incorrectly but their performance stunk! It was mightily disappointing because the Costco package included charger, NiCad packs, push-to-talk lapel mics and belt clips. I was a little suspicious as my "older" style FRS radios with built-in FM radios and weather band were every bit a strong as the 5-mile type. You may want to move up to a professional communication radio but they don't talk to the FRS crowd. Have better luck at this than I did. I'd be most interested in knowing what you end up choosing by model and make.

They usually say, "up to" 5 miles. Ok if you're measuring 2 miles down one mountain and 2 miles up the next mountain.

I have been a Motorola two way radio dealer for 12 years I only do the commercial and government side of the radios but I can tell you this there is no portable radio that can talk for 5 miles or more . if you are lucky maybe you can get 1 mile, if you read the fine print it will probably state "up" to 5 miles under ideal conditions like no sunspots the moon and the earth and the sun in complete alignment etc. even with a commercial license a portable with repeater system is only good for 3 miles and you are talking major dollars, sorry Rich but I don't want you to get scammed if anybody tells you different ask them to put it in writing.

I bought the Motorola's at costco $49 cheap. They worked Fine at Six flags with the kids. Thats what i bought them for. They might work if i'm behind another kat on a Trip?? Unless i get to far behind!!!I think for what you seem to want your going to have to spend the money.
