My family is planning a vacation down to Texas. We’ve come up with a list of sites to see in the cities we think we can cover while we’re down there.

Dallas/Ft. Worth: Aquarium, Zoo
Houston: Nature and Science Museum, Space Center, Water Park, 6 Flags
San Antonio: Sea World, 6 Flags
Austin: Duck Tour, State History Museum

If anyone has any insight on these sites or possible other sites, I’d appreciate it. We’re planning on making the trip in June or July.

TIA

Visit the Ft.Worth zoo, not the Dallas zoo. You can also visit JFK assasination site, and Six Flags. Have fun. PGD aka Ron

If, by chance, you happen to be into Prowlers, you might consider visiting the must see Prowler Museum while in Houston. I'm sure the curator would allow out of towners in the door, if you asked really nice.
Space center and Science/nature museum visit are nice. Personally, 6 flags is too high priced, but fun for the kids. I THINK they recently combined entry with the water park side for one price tho. Since you're that close, Moody Gardens in Galveston is a nice visit. Impressive 3D Imax, butterfly exhibit is nice and fun. Sea World in SA is fun. The Alamo is in SA too.
Enjoy your trip. May it be safe and fun!

....I lived in San Antonio a long time ago...didn't really care for Texas at all...wanted to be back in Indiana.....

SAN ANTONIO

* Alamo..not really that impressive, it is in the downtown area and you can drive right by it and not really notice it...BUT IT IS HISTORIC and a must see !!!

* "The River Walk" is impressive and beautiful....also downtown...walking distance from the Alamo if I remember correctly.....used to be a dangerous place, but I understand that has all changed....

* several military bases to drive by, not sure how tight security is these days as far as touring, but there isn't much to see anyway.....

OTHER PLACES

* drove to Johnson city ?? a few hours away to see LBJ's ranch.....dissapointed, couldn't get close enough to see much.....

* Corpus Cristy was the most beautiful place I saw in all of Texas the few years I was there.....

* Padre Island was a most popular place then, but I never saw it in person...

* If you have never been to Texas, be prepared for a lot of driving....EVERYTHING IS A FEW HOURS AWAY FROM WHERE EVER YOU ARE.....

quick story....being an Indiana boy, you will understand ....traveling down a highway for several hours one day in Texas heading who knows where...I was driving a new '73 Cuda and we started seeing tumbleweeds blowing across the highway...felt like an episode of the Twilight Zone to a Hoosier boy......finally came into a little town and there were HITCHING POSTS in front of all the stores, and me without a rope for my Cuda .....also noticed a distinct lack of MOPARS in Texas....Fords were popular, but Chevys were King !!!
have a good trip..............PS might take a quick visit to Mexico if you have never been there....again, I wasn't impressed, but it was interesting.....could be lots of border problems these days....

What part of Texas are you talking about?

Or were you in the Twilight Zone and just didn't know it!

Whealy - If in the Austin area - try the LBJ Presidential Museum, and if you come through College Station, you need to stop at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Museum. Two interesting places to visit. Like Tangled said - pick an area your going to visit - other wise your going to be doing a whole lot of driving -

While the Krehel Prowler Museum is normally closed to the public most days of the year due to security concerns,,,if you email Mike well in advance, I'm sure that a possible tour could be arranged for you and your family. I have two vicious guard dogs that will have to be tied up before the tour. Cameras are allowed, but NO pictures can be taken of my personal office!

Thanks all for the additional info so far.

My understanding is that the cities I’ve listed are all about 3-4 hours drive from each other. We are also considering Galveston to find some time to spend in the Gulf. My plan is to drive to a new area then find something to do that afternoon there. Then spend a day or two in that area. Planning on making it about a 10 day trip and being flexible after we get there.

I have a 7 and 5 year old that enjoy zoos, museums and amusement park just in case you see a theme in my selections so far! We’re DRIVING down from Indy. The last two years we went to Florida-Disney and Denver (about a two weeks after the event there last year to see family). So this trip seems to be about the same miles to destination. We excluded Corpus Christi and SP Island because even through they look like cool spots, that extra drive would be just too long.

I've only been to Texas twice. And both times was driving through to and from Arizona. Please keep the suggestions coming.

Whealy: Definitely go to the Ft Worth zoo, not the Dallas. The Dallas Zoo is constantly under construction and not that great. You can also go to the stock yards in Ft. Worth - very cool old part of town with great shops, etc. On your way down to Austin, etc. if you get a chance go to Fredericksburg and take your kiddos down the Guadalupe on tubes. They will love it. The Dallas Aquarium is very cool and just a few blocks from the 6th Floor Kennedy museum and the West End. Let us know when you are coming and we will try and get a few of us together to meet you. Tami and Ken

Thanks for clarifying that A/C. I didn't mean to imply it was normally open to the public. Sorry Mike.

Houston has a lot to offer......

Reliant Stadium: Home of 2004 Super Bowl
Six Flags Astroworld:across the street from the stadium
Krehel Museum: children need to mind their manners tho

My fav to hang out at is the Kemah BoardWalk....Its awesome with it being right on the bay. It has about 10 places to choose from to eat. Kids rides and a squirting fountain for them to play in.It also has a real nice hotel there (275.00 per night) along with the neat little specialty shops in the area for the wife to spend money in. Its only few miles from Galveston. If your thinking Aquarium, There is the new one downtown. It has rides and 3 places to eat with a shark tunnel. You take the train ride and it takes you through the tunnel....SUPER COOL!! The boardwalk has basiclly the same resturant as the downtown aquarium where you sit and dine among wall to wall ceiling to floor beautiful fish.
N.A.S.A is only a few minutes from the Boardwalk also. They have so much to see and do also. If you need any brochures or anything, just email me or something....I'll get you some as soon as I can. Or maybe do a search on the web.....in my book, Houston is the place to be! But then again, I live here!!

Yes, AC is correct that museum tours are available if your going to be in Houston. Afternoon and early evening hours, children must be accompanied by an adult. Please Email me to schedule a visit!

I live just north of San Antonio and I can recommend several things if you have the time.
Try to go down town to the River Walk. It is a great place to go in the evening to get a bite to eat and relax. Also while you are there you should go see the Alamo, that way you can say you have been there and the kids will like it.
Sea World is nice and it has several roller coaster rides. If you are looking for a amusement park San Antonio also has Fiesta Texas (Six Flags).
But if you are looking for something different the kids would love. I would visit Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, this is a really neat water park that is fed by the Guadalupe River. New Braunfels is north of San Antonio on Ih-35 between Austin and San Antonio. You will enjoy this! One last place you might like is Natural Bridge Caverns, it also is on Ih-35 just north of S.A.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Texas. -KD

How come no one mentioned the Eight Wonder of the World and the reason Astro Turf was invented, The Astro Dome. Oh, that's right, they razed it. Never mind.

Actually, Ed, they haven't razed it YET. Just the other night they mentioned that they are trying to figure out how to use it. I'm not too sure it's even open for tours right now, but if it is, its a nice tour. And if you're at 6 flags already, its right across the freeway and certainly worth a try. It will be a sad day when the dome does go away tho. I have many memories from the Astrodome. Make some of your own, while you can.

On the way to San Antonio from Austin is a town called New Braunfells (spelling might be wrong) Your kids would enjoy tubing down the Guatalupe River (assuming they like to swim)

Being from Canyon Lake north of San Antonio, I suggest the following:
1) Riverwalk in San Antonio
2) Seaworld or Fiesta TX (Sixflags)
3) Natural Caverns (just north of San Antonio)
4) Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, rated best water park in the USA. (40 minutes north of S.A.)
5) Toobing down the Guatalupe River (a blast !)
6) Rent a Pontoon boat on Canyon Lake (fresh water) or beach

Yes, it's true, a lot of driving. However, being from Michigan all my life, you'll find the weather is very enjoyable.

Have fun !

Duane

Agree with all the above comments and give a second vote for Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Just be sure to use lots of sunscreen.

All,

Thanks for all the great info. I’ve been out of commission for the past few days with the flu so sorry I didn’t responds earlier. Shouldn’t have any problem finding things to do!

Tami,

Thanks for the offer. I’ll pass along dates when I have them. However, we’ll probably be traveling on weekends which I assume would be the most likely time to get people together So that may make it tough, but it would be great to put some faces to screen names.

Judy,

Thanks for letting me know what’s available. We’ll see how that all matches up when we solidify our dates. I’m sure there are dates the museum is closed as well. As for the kids, they’ve been trained from the day they could get in a car that there isn’t any reason to touch a car unless they are opening a door or window or washing it. I’m sure there will be some later therapy to help them resolve my “training”.
