OK, bought a CTS caddy to be able to haul mom around but I can't leave anything alone,,,,sssoooooo, I put 18's on with Toyo hipo's which by the way do not work at all in the snow, serious at all,,,actually got suck in a parking lot with fresh snow pointing down hill, this is with the traction control on and the car would not move, so I disconnected the TC(traction control stability deal) and was able to slip and slide out of there, later that night I had to run a red light traveling about 3 mph cause I was going up hill and if I stopped I would have had to back down the hill with 6 cars behind me and to my surprise there was a law man behind me, well I got to talk to the Man and he let me go, whew,,,,,,so about forty-five minutes later I put the car in a ditch , maybe 5 mph, the TCSD was on and put on the right front brake and helped me to head for the ditch,,,,,anyways

I went out yesterday and got on trick snow tires with a tread pattern which looked like it wouldn't work anywhere,,,,,,,,well, to my surprise it's like the Caddy has four wheel drive with chains on, ok , almost,,,,

When I got home last night I thought the driveway was clear cause the car was stuck like glue and when I walked to the apartment I almost busted my butt on the sheer glass of ice,,,,

Anyways, I thought I would pass this on to you fellow snow goers,,

Later

Of course you knew what the winters would be like when you moved back, but now you get the real experience.

I hope the new tires keep you out of the ditches.

Drove in the snow last night. I am always careful to coast across bridges and overpasses so the back end doesn't swing around. One good thing I have found out is the front windshield desfroster keeps the windshield warm enough so the snow melts and slides away just like rain with a new coat of RainX applies, so I still haven't had to reinstall wipers yet!

GC - it is well known that you couldn't even drive very well in warm California, so I'm not surprised by your troubles in snow and ice. I can only advise you to do two things:

BUY A HUMMER

OR

TAKE THE BUS!

David, the Caddy is lowered, 18's, body kit and billet grill work, spoiler and more, looks like I just moved from California

OK, Gary, you've got us holding our breath - Complete details, please - make, model??? (Any reason not to recommend these for a '98 Firebird? It's like a fish in the snow).

Thanks.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Arctic-Alpin

These tires really blow my mind, a friend was here from San Diego (gearhead racer) and he too was truly amazed by the winter performance of these tires, I went with 16's to have more sidewall flex which gives more bite and went with the narrowest tire they had in stock, you don't want a tire that's wide for the snow, the narrower the tire the more bite you get,,,,,,,, I hope this all helps....

There is one problem, the car looks pretty silly with the combo I have on there but tires are like having chains on all 4 corners,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Closing the loop.

Gary recommended the Michelin Arctic Alpins for a rear-wheel drive car.

I put them on my 98 Firebird.

Waited for snow.

Have about 6 inches today, plus the piles from the snowplow. The Bird went through everything - GRReat traction, front tires rode over the snow rather than plowing in, GRReat stability. I pushed it as far as I could and the only slide I could produce was breaking out the rear when powering through turns. I would certainly have been stuck on several of the snow piles with the OEM Goodyear All-Weathers.

GRReat snow tire, that doesn't look like a snow tire, I will be running them year-round.

THANKS, GARY.

Your so welcome Steve, so you like your new 4 wheel drive Firebird? As a rain tire they say they are excellent.

I have used Bridgestone Blizzaks on one of my Mercedes in the past. Rear wheel drive, lousey in the snow. I put 4 blizzaks on and Wow! what a difference. They are great on snow and Ice! The car was almost undriveable without them and then it would go just about anywhere.
