Something I thought would never happen to me has.

I used my Business check card at a Burger King drive thru yesterday morning to buy breakfast and all seemed fine.

This morning when I got online to check my account activity I see the bad news. Numerous charges both around here in Dallas, as well as Miami, FL for purchases that I didn't make. I guess the crook at the drive thru swiped my card in one of those card readers I've been hearing about, and then made a fake duplicate card and went to town with it.
Now I'm out of a check card for the rest of the week for sure. I can't get my money back until it actually posts to the account and then it will take at least 24 hours to get it back.
The good side is that I've already called one of the gas stations the "fake card" was used at, and I am hoping to get a look at the video later on today.

Bottom line. Don't let your credit/bank card leave your sight, and this stuff won't happen.

I can't wait to find out for sure if it was that guy at the drive thru though. I've got a good feeling it is, because I haven't used the card anywhere else in the past few days.

Sorry just needed to vent.

Similar thing happened here in Kansas City last week. Guy gets out of his car to go in the house. Crook approches with a knife. Takes wallet and takes of. Guy sees what kind of car the crooks are driving. Guy after being robbed dials 911 on his cell phone. Cops are coming. Then called credit card service 800 number. Operator says the card is being used as they are speaking on the phone. Cops pull up and connect with credit card company. Credit card company tells cops where the card is being used, (street address). Police helicopter is close to that address. Looks down and spots crooks car and the crook. Crook looks up and sees cop helicopter. Runs over to another car and highjacks it. Helicopter sees it all and trails second car. Cops get to filling station where the first car was being gassed up. Arrest 4 more crooks in the first car. More cops then catch crook in second car. Stupid crooks all arrested.

I think the moral of the story is pay cash & don't eat at Burger King it will clog your arteries. lol
Sorry to hear about the aggravation Ron. Last Christmas my VISA got declined and then my Discover card got declined. I figured someone scammed me on eBay. Turns out the store did not even take Discover and she screwed up entering the VISA. She was new. The older clerk explained what happened and the sale was fine. I was quite concerned for a few minutes since I still had $ 4 before I got to my limit and I wanted to get something NICE for Sandy. lol

I've been thru this too... 01 Prowler, one thing you have on your side is they used your card in your home city and state. My info was stolen and used on the internet, all over the place, Vegas, Bahamas, Virgin Isles... but nothing local so the local police couldn't help. They did call Vegas but of course they didn't care, couldn't help... all my charges were under $500 so they didn't raise suspicion, and they only used the card for 1 or 2 days... these scumbags are smart. they know they won't be caught because they know no one is coming looking for them... the banking industry is going to have to solve this problem, they're the ones that made cash obsolete...

Everyone's worst nightmare! Probably NO amount of safeguarding keeps one 100% safe, but I NEVER charge meals on my Check Card! Most everything else, sure! Groceries, yes! Internet items, yes! Just NEVER meals at restaurants; mostly because I don't trust the card disappearing from my view!

Had supper w/a colleague when I was TDY once upon a time & colleague paid for meal w/credit card...which waiter took with him...and guess what? Waiter disappeared! Card never returned to colleague! I paid cash! And THAT was a huge learning curve for me--plus that was before CHEK CARDS were even IN existence...but a learning curve to this very day! So, the advice about NOT letting the card outta one's sight--not even for a few seconds--is wayyy totally valid & should be remembered! I alwyas have/still do!

I guess sometimes people learn things the hard way. I normally use my check card just because it's easier, and quicker than cash most of the time. Now all the time I have saved by using it is gone by this hassle.
I still haven't gotten to see the video from the gas station. The manager of the store was supposed to contact me, but I guess they have better things to do. I guess I'll just make a trip back to the Burger King to have a chat instead.

Only thing I use my check card for is to get money from the ATM. A check card does not necessarily have the same protections that a credit card does.

A CHEK CARD has MORE protection than ANY credit card! U R NOT responsible for 1 penny if ever stolen and/or used!

Thanks for the generous offer Steve!

That's not necessary though. This is the perfect example of why I always keep plenty of $$$$ around the house.

I doubt they ever catch the guy that did it. The bank wasn't too surprised about it, and I guess to them it happens all the time. I can't file charges since in the long run I'm not the one at a loss. In reality after it's all said and done the merchants will be the ones that lose the money. I would like to see the scum bag go to jail, and pay for his crime, but I guess to the authorities it's just nickel and dime stuff even though it's a felony.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but even if you see the transaction, keep your card in sight, they have your number on their copy. A kid working there can take that number and order things over the internet or by dialing 1-800. That leaves a trail since they have to get it delivered but they still do it every day in every city.

Ron,

I have thought about this all day....the strange thing is when I got ready to leave today I got a call from the credit union where we bank. The lady wanted to know if I had posession of my debit card. I said yes. Then she ask if I made a $5 donation to (XYZ) and tried to buy something from Spain, I said no and Sue was at the hospital for a sleep study and that she couldn't have done it........so I got it within 24 hours of yours......., leading me to think about it all day...........I doubt a kid at BK would have the resources to have a card reader and machine to duplicate a card.

I went to the credit union to sign papers and got the phone number of the place the $5 donation was made. Once Sue got home she called and the info they gave her, the person that made the donation was in LA,CA and she thinks so was the charity. It turns out that it was Sue's card that they had the info on but both were closed just to be safe. The RED FLAG was the 2nd place the guy tried to use it someplace in SPAIN and they red flag anything in Spain (why I don't know)

She remembers that there was a breach in info at the credit union a few months back and we now think that is how they got the info.

It seems that late last year I remember a couple places that also had breach of security on some credit card info. It is possible that you were one of the ones that got hit and it is now just showing up.

This is the 2nd time I have had problems with stolen identity/fraud/theft. About 10 years ago I had someone try to buy a $94,000 Mercedes Benz with my credit info, again I lucked out and a girl working at MB motor credit seen something that didn't add up and they contacted me.

I feel for anyone that has to go thru Credit Fraud/Theft.....I wish there was some way to catch and hang the people involved to detour others from doing it....but this is a crime that they get away with mush more than they should

they are top refund my $5, now I have to make sure there are no other charges and figure out what to do to reduce the risk in the future

Could be worse. I had mine stolen by someone breaking into the banks computer somehow.

2000$ in escort charges later my bank cancelled the card without telling me, in the middle of dinner with a good client. They made good though and tracked the dude down somehow, I had to fill out forms proving that I would come to court and say I did not make the charges but nothing ever came of it. I think that he pled out.

Uh, if you give all your info out over the internet...IT IS OUT OF YOUR VIEW. While you are ordering from them, they can be doing the same with your info as you. True, the card never leaves your sight but, on the internet, you don't/can't run a card through anything. You just have to give them the info.

I use one card for everything. Amex. They know our charge history so anything even slightly out of the norm and they call me or the wife to verify. Since we pay it off monthly, we review each item on the bill and then it's on to the next month.

I also only carry two cards with me. A bank card and Amex. If I ever get robbed, don't have to worry about calling 2500 places. Just bank and Amex.

I also never sign any credit card. What I do is write on the back with a permanent black marker, "REQUEST PHOTO ID"
