For those of you that may have bought the young'uns a telescope or have binoculars a neat site gets better in the next 3 weeks. Saturn will be at its biggest and brightest appearance to us earthlings for the next few decades (2029). It peaks around 1/27. This is one of the easiest planets to look at with kids to get them or even yourself intersted in observing. The following link will put you at a site where you can enter your location in a few different ways. It will then show you the current sky to give you an idea of where to look. Sky Chart |

On 1/27 Saturn is at 'opposition' which means it is directly opposite the sun, thus it rises in the east as the sun sets in the west. Truth be told, Saturn will be a great viewing sight for the next several months. If you get the chance, check it out! As dbudner said though, it will be it's best until the year 2029. This is mostly because of the angle of the rings, the apparent 'tilt' from our point of view It will be the 'brightest' 'yellowish' "star" in the east shortly after sunset throughout February, March, so if you get a chance, even a pair of binoculars is nice... preferably at least 7x50s |
