remembering the 63 Tempest.....in 1963, a kid I worked with and his older brother(they were known as "the Frog" and "the Toad") became the new owners of one of these with the 326 engine....within the first 12 hours they had torn the transmission out of it....several days later it was wrecked the first time....no one ever blamed the car, just the young drivers and alcohol....on one particular night, they drove the Tempest to Ohio on a beer run and after a long police chase they lost control of the car and plowed thru a corn field....they evaded the police, but the car was stuck in mud, in another state.... they were scared what their mom would do to them so they abandoned the car and walked/hitchhiked back to their home in Indiana which was approximately 40 miles....they reported the car stolen and their mom never knew the real story...

..the dark blue Tempest did end up taking the life of the owner Frog, and four other young adults about a year later, slammed into the side of a mountain somewhere in Georgia.....another alcohol related tragedy..

A friend of mine's mother got a small Olds with the big engine. That thing would fly and weighed nothing. I can't remember if it was a Cutlass or an F-85 or the model. Looked just like the Pont.

in 1963 a neighbor guy, Steve, sold his hot rod, a late 20s roadster of some kind, and became a serious contender for the king of the street in our town.....he bought a new red 63 1/2 Ford XL500 with the 427 engine and the blistered hood...I was too young to hang with these guys, but us kids watched the older guys from the next door backyard....the car would arrive, usually on Saturday, and they would take the wheels off the back and install slicks, open the headers....lots of activity under the hood, a few beers, a few cuss words and the hood would go back in place....the Ford shook the earth when they were finished and fired it up....

the big 427 would back down the long narrow driveway and grumble down the street to parts unknown....a few hours later it would return and they would work on it again, returning the car to a stock looking configuration ...I only saw the car in action one time, he did a giant burnout on the street around the corner from the backyard where they did all the modifications...set the slicks on fire it seemed.....smoke everywhere...it was an awsome site to a 12 year old kid with a Schwinn...

56 Chevy 2dr sedan burgundy and white was my first ride 283 3spd on the column. Next thing you know there are bucket seats and a floor **** in it, then solid lifters a four barrel, mags and a crazy 16 yr old behind the wheel. Wow those we'er the days..

But the car that stands out the most for me then was an older friend had a 56 Chevy Convert. Yellow and Blk one of the best colour combo's there is. Thats why I luv Chromer's ride IMO it suits the Kat also

First car was a 1964 Pontiac Catalina convertible. 421 with 3 duces, 3 speed with a 411 rear end. 8 lug Pontiac wheels, AM-FM radio with REVERB. Got about 3 to 4 miles to a gallon. Made about 25 dollars a week and 20 of it went for gas. Still looking for one today, but I don't know if will even fit in the garage.

Ed, It must have been a Cutlass. I think the only V-8 engines used in the F-85's were the little all-aluminum V-8's. We had the Buick dealership and our little version of the F-85 and the Tempest was the Skylark. It used the same all-aluminum engine as the F-85. The small engine that came in the standard model was a V-6 (cast iron). Buick advertised that it was the first V-6 engine ever offered. (Don't know if that was the actual facts. The standard engines in the Tempest in those days was a 4-cyl (cast iron). I was made from half of the Pontiac cast-iron 400CID block. That engine used the same head, crank, pistons and rods, and cam as the original 400. Those 4 cyls had a lot of probs with balance. Lot of vibrations. GM kept the aluminum V-8 for only a couple years. We had a lot of problems with them.

Edward Monahan,
Rarely do I pick on you, but the truth must be known. I have the actual pictures of the car that you first dreamed about and later bought when it became available. Let's face it Ed, it's you:

Powell Crosley was the guy who figured out how to mass produce radios, getting people away from the old homemade receivers, the crystal set. He made millions. He bought WLW which broadcast almost across the entire nation. He bought the Cin'ti REDS and renamed Redland Field, CROSLEY Field. He invented a type of refrigeration that was two balls connected by some type of tube. You would rotate them to cool the cooler. Later he invented the shelves on the refrigerator door, hence Shelvador.
After making and losing his fortune several times, he came up with the Crosley automobile. They had aluminum engines and were made in IND.
That piece of junk Crosley is worth some bucks to someone.
Personally I liked the Iseta (Izeta ?)the best.
I know that is more info than you all needed.

After blowing up that pic I am not sure it is even a Crosley. The grille doesn't look right but it has been way too long since I have seen one.

Ed - I can confirm,,,,,it is a Crosley in the pictures. I wasn't aware of the other things he invented,,,,very interesting,,but I don't understand the part about the two balls and refrigeration

I did do an appraisal of that Crosley,,,,,I asked the guy what it weighed. He replied>>>why? I told him scrap iron was worth 20 cents a pound right now. He then said something about the Cincy Rusted-Out Intrepid Automobile Club, and that he was prepping the Crosley for some fresh paint soon, lol. Maybe I underbid the true worth of the Crosley? Like you,,,I probably hadn't seen you of those in nearly forty years.

Read about Powell Crosley JR, here
http://local.aaca.org/junior/spotlight/crosley/crosley.htm

Read this one. The car was at Barret Jackson in AZ, owned by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Here is the Icy Ball. (I couldn't remember the name.)

My obsession is a little more recent, like the 90's recent. I had to be six years old at the time. Anyway it's was May 1996 and my parents where getting there first Dodge Caravan. I had always played with my Hotwheels, as a matter of fact the first hotwheel I had was 1970 Dodge Challanger. I still have it, sitting on my shelf.

So the day we went to the Dodge dealership down the road, the 1996 viper GTS indy pace car was there. I stayed inside with the car playing with my hotwheels. It's just one thing I'll never forget. Being told by Mr. Dennis Adams that the car was called "viper" and that it had the biggest engine produced in America. It just stuck in my mind.

We ended up getting a Grand Caravan in, of course, prowler purple. The following week I saw a red RT/10, on a school trip a yellow RT/10. I would always go nuts everytime I saw a viper, swearing and screaming to catch up or follow it.

As for most of you guys, I would do anything to trade for a day in your shoes. I'd do anything to get behind the wheel of some muscle cars in there era.
