I did not verify this statement.

Let's hear it for Costco!! (This is just mind-boggling!) Make sure you read all the way past the list of the drugs
The woman that signed below is a Budget Analyst out of federal Washington, DC offices.

Did you ever wonder how much it costs a drug company for the active ingredient in prescription medications? Some people think it must cost a lot, since
many drugs sell for more than $2.00 per tablet. We did a search of offshore chemical synthesizers that supply the active ingredients found in drugs approved by the FDA. As we have revealed in past issues of Life Extension, a significant percentage of drugs sold in the United
States contain active ingredients made in other countries. In our independent investigation of how much profit drug companies really make, we obtained the actual price of active ingredients used in some of the most popular drugs sold in America.

The data below speaks for itself.

Since the cost of prescription drugs is so outrageous, I thought everyone should know about this. Please read the following and pass it on.
It pays to shop around. This helps to solve the mystery as to why they can afford to put a Walgreen's on every corner. On Monday night, Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for Channel 7 News in Detroit, did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found
in his investigation, that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as 3,000% or more. Yes, that's not a typo.....three thousand percent! So often, we blame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfully so. But in this case, the fault clearly
lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription drug, and bought the name brand, you might pay $100 for 100 pills.
The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80, making you! think you are "saving" $20. What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills may have only cost him $10!

At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for
the generic drugs.

I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea
in chemo patients.

I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for
60 pills at CVS.. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pills for $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could have got 150 at Costco for $28.08.

I would like to mention, that although Costco is a "membership" type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in. (this is
true)

I went there this past Thursday and asked them. I am asking each of you to please help me by copying this letter, and passing it into your own e-mail, and send it to everyone you know with an e-mail address.

I don't think I indicated there was a problem. I posted an email I got. I thought it was interesting.
I do wonder why they take out full page ads in magazines and ads on TV shows telling you that XXXXX may be right for you and to ask your doctor and they do not bother to tell you what the medication is for. That is millions of dollars and they need to see good results for the money spent.
I guess there COULD be a problem for a little old lady living on Social Security payments of $500 a month and she needs three or four scrips a month but that is not my problem since I am not a little old lady and I have great health care benefits.

Red5, I am not sure if you mean I posted it because Meandmykitty is a drug exec.
I had no idea what Rick did for a living and it was not "aimed" at anyone. I got an email from an ex-relative and I posted it. End of story.
If you were not referring to my initial post then I don't know what you were referring to or I don't get it.

It is my understanding that if they state what the drug is for in the commercial, they have to also state what all of the known side effects are. That is why they tell you to ask your doctor if it is right for you or visit their website.

Ed, I don't think Red5's comments were directed at you.
I was thinking along the same lines as RED5 when I read this post. This, I believe is a reference to another post going on currently.

Ed thank you for taking the time to share this info, sadly I'm not surprised. There is or at least should be a difference between capitalism and GREED. Not looking forward to the day that I have to choose between eating or medicine. Happy Thanksgiving to You and Sandy! Jeff

All of my prescriptions are $10 (at least while I'm employed). So I've decided I'll take as much as I can right now and store it in what little fat I have for use down the road. Is this a bad plan? Figured I would ask since my judgement has been questioned lately.

That works out to $120/year per prescription.

Whatever is available in generics I fill at Costco once per year and pay cash. The worst case is a 50% savings, one prescription is $12 bucks/year.

When I figured it out, I'm saving $500-600 compared to the insurance copay. (I do mailorder using Insurance for namebrands/not available as generics).

How do you buy a year's supply of drugs at one time? I thought the most they would ever dispense was 60 or 90 days at one time. Most of them are for a 30 day supply.

For maintenance prescriptions, my doctor routinely writes year-long prescriptions at my annual physical. Whether it's written [1 pill/day times 365] or [30 pills times 12], Costco can fill them in bulk (I don't know if this is the same in other states or for various levels of controlled drugs). If you pay cash, the 30-day/90-day insurance rules that everyone gets used to don't apply.
Note that if you break down Costco's cost structure, there's a [dispensing cost per prescription] plus [per pill cost] plus [bulk discounts]. Minimum cost/prescription is once per year to get the single dispensing cost and discounts jump in as you get full bottles (usually 90 or 100 for me, one is a bottle of 500 for a twice/day prescription).
I go in to Costco with a list of all maintenance prescriptions and ask for "the cost of your least expensive generic, even if we have to wait for it". I also ask for pricing on the namebrands, but they haven't ever worked out compared to my insurance copay (but I know that one of the two that I'm taking is supposed to go generic this year, so it may get even better).
As an example of cost difference, when I tried a new prescription for 30 days, it was $3 or $4. When I bought the year's worth, it was $12.
I suggest that everyone take a list of their family's maintenance prescriptions in to Costco and ask for the yearly cost, you don't need prescriptions in hand to do this. If the price looks good, ask the pharmacist if you need the prescription written a certain way based on your state.

Thanks for the explanation. I had never heard of that. That does not mean it is not legal here, maybe it is just routine practice so that is what everyone perceives as the right way or only way.
I get my brand names for $ 5 for two months worth and generic for $ 1 for two months so it not worth it for me to go to Costco. I get mine by mail and there is no charge to me for postage.
Sandy takes a couple of things that might be worth checking out at Costco.
I have heard from several POA folks in the past couple of days saying that this looks like a heck of a deal and they will check it out.
