GM to Ax 30,000 Jobs, Close 12 Facilities
By DEE-ANN DURBIN, AP Auto Writer

DETROIT - General Motors Corp., pounded by declining sales and rising health care costs, said Monday it will cut more than a quarter of its North American manufacturing jobs and close 12 facilities by 2008. The United Auto Workers called the plan "devastating" and....

The plants that are closing make a variety of vehicles. GM didn't target plants where it makes full-size trucks and SUVs, products it's counting on for a comeback. Instead, it's significantly reducing its capacity to produce minivans like the Buick Terraza, mid-size SUVs like the GMC Envoy and mid-size sedans like the Buick LaCrosse.
It's also ending production at the Lansing plant that produces the slow-selling Chevrolet SSR, a small pickup.

I probably would have bought one when they were new....but the price mark up over MSRP made me wait....while I waited, I found other toys I wanted and never went back....doubt I ever will now.....Viper trucks are now bringing $30K for slightly used models, if I get a truck, thats what it will be...cant lose much when it has already depreciated 40%...

30,000 less employees paying into the pension fund. That cannot be good news for the fund.

Ed - most of those effected will be in the +40 year old age group,,,from what I hear. True,,,there will be less paying into the retirement funds, but those funds are protected for each employee. Its the health and welfare trust funds have will be hurt somewhat by the loss of big number of workers.

The funds are protected but they count on the newer employees keeping the cash flowing, I am sure. Inflation hurts it over time or a very bad stock market like we had 5 years ago. I know of too many people who were vested in a pension fund and the company filed bankruptcy and things went south very quickly. Hopefully they will pull it out.

I could actually see the 3 majors merging down the road. The North American car manufacturers are hanging by a thread.

Anyone know the production numbers for the SSR? I'm sure values will stay somewhat higher like the Cyclone,Typhoon trucks.

On the news last evening they said Ford plans to announce plant closings and layoffs in January 06. No word on DC.

If I'm not mistaken I recall hearing recently that the federal pension guarantee fund that insures/protects pensions is nearly dry, so these layoffs are really not good news.

I also heard something about this fund and that it was about 30 billion in the hole already and that no one should expect anything from them and at this time I do not think our government can bail out anything else. It just another case of big corporations breaking their promise to their long time employees on health and retirement pay. It all just SUCKS big time..
