halicat won't mind,,,AC's home area:

Race today - NBC network - 3:30 ET
Phoenix International Raceway
Fast one mile track - 9 degree banking
Sold out - 130,000 spectators + the cheap seats on the hill
Weather - What would you expect from Phoenix in Nov. = PERFECT

AC's Picks:
1. Carl Edwards - may not win the Nextel Cup, but the kid has his nads strapped down to the seat and will drive the wheels off his FORD to atleast make a race out of it all the way to Homestead.
2. My guy Biffel - got screwed by a bad wheel last week,,,,has to make some ground up today.
3. Ryan Newman - he is mad,,,losing points the last few weeks in the chase>>>>> goes for it today.
4. Mark Martin - starting way back,,,charges forward to fourth. He may be in his last years of driving,,,,,but he still has what it takes to stay in the front.
5. Smoke Stewart - skillful, steady, consistent, and Home Depot provides the plumbing for his run for the Cup

Darkhorse pick: #88 Jarrett

START 'EM UP

stopped at the gate of the Phoenix Intnl. Raceway a couple of years ago to see if they had tours etc etc....just an off season weekday.....the guard at the gate was a retired pro ball player and nearly talked my leg off.....but he told me the neighborhood where the track was located was a very high crime area and they pull bodies out of the little canal/river/ next to the track about once a week....apparently the local drug dealers favorite place to hide bodys....we couldn't get in, so we took a few pix at the gate and left...

Al - you must dislike Smoke Stewart? He's in a Chebby, but you never pick him The guy came up in dirt, won in ND cars, and drives the wheels off of anything he is in. He'll probably win the cup.

Tangled - that story was true a few years back,,,,,but the Avondale/Litchfield Park area of west Phoenix is exploding in population now. Tens of thousands of new homes in that area,,,,,you wouldn't recognize the area today

House Kat gets his dog Earl shaved before the Nascar extravaganza today....Earl and House Kat share the same Lazy Boy during the race(Earl operates the remote) and Earls whiskers tend to give House Kat a beard burn on his cheek....

HOT off the high speed SPEED CHANNEL news line:

Kurt Busch removed out of the #97 Ford. Replaced with Kenny Wallace.

Kurt was drinking friday night,,,then drove his car,,,blowing a stop sign just missing another car. Clocked going over 60 in a 45mph zone. County sheriff officer stopped him >>> he refused the breath test. Took him to remote sheriff office in the area, but their breath testing equipment just happened to stop working at the moment they were going to test Kurt [how convenient],,,,so just a RECKLESS DRIVING citation was issued, and he was released.

CONGRATS to Jack Rousch,,,,he was leaving the team anyway!

I feel bad for Kurt....

just saw the interview with him...he was nearly in tears...

innocent untill proven guilty,... that exists to protect us all...
he's paying a heavy price for speeding, running a stop sign and mouthing off...

Classy comments by Roger Penske on the incident...the cat in the hat didn't impress me but he didn't have much of a choice...

Kurt will be back....

They said they might be driving and INTREPID next week at Homestead. I knew I should have held out for more $ when I sold that jewel. It is a 1994 RED one. Look for it.

I had second place predicted correctly,,lol. Bif was the class of the field until the last forty laps, when the temperatures started to drop, changing the track. Smoke was were I said he would,,,,basically, its over for the chasers. Good Race

Jim - maybe what you don't know about the Kurt Busch incident: The officers smelled booze on him. He refused the breath test at the scene. He bad mouthed the cops. At the substation sheriff's office,,,,the alcohol test showed he had been drinking, but the % factor test wouldn't provide a factor [malfunction////so they said = BS]. Ya don't mess with Sheriff Joe out here,,,,,they could have thrown his skinny butt in jail until seeing a judge on monday morning. He got thrown a cookie, and got his break [Think it had something to do with NASCAR bringing millions of $$$ into Phoenix twice a year? DA ]
When Kurt ran the stop sign running from the law, and "if" he would have hit another car and killed somebody,,,,,,would you still feel sorry for him? Penske was BSing the media also. Roger Penske will not put up with the kind of crap on his teams either,,,,,,much tougher than Rousch Racing. Remember Little Al Unser? Booze and wife beating? Penske threw him out in the street. I'll step down now, lol.

No argument there old buddy... Drinking and driving is a serious crime....
but if there is no proof... which there doesn't seem to be, he is only guilty of traffic violations...

No doubt it will all come out in court and if he is guilty, he'll get what's coming to him....

but he is innocent until proven guilty

every citizen has that protection....even in sheriff Joes Town...

"good news, Sheriff Joe is back in town to save the day"

Sheriff Joe is from Logansport Indiana, his nephew lives in New Castle and is a good friend of mine....I have several Sheriff Joe souveneirs from his Dodge Days that belonged to Joes mother...a Dodge lamp that used to sit on his desk, a big statue of Joe and several metal buttons with his picture....kinda rare stuff...

Tangled - our Sheriff Joe is tougher,,,,houses 10,000 'county' law breakers. No tv, no smokes, no girlie magazines, live in tents during 115 degree weather,,,,,,and Halicat thinks they are innocent until proven guilty,,lol >>>> maybe in Canada, not Maricopa County Az. Two nothing meals per day,,,cost the county $.87 per day to feed each inmate >>>> think they are eating good? Cost them $1.25 per day to feed Sheriff Joe's guard dogs that work the perimeter. The dogs eat better than the inmates!!!

Man, I missed all those interviews. I never could warm up to Kurt, maybe he had some of this stuff coming, I don't know. I hope we have some excitement next week in Homestead. Smoke has real good shot, but we want it to be close, makes the trip even better. I may get CTPROWLER out of the Keys to get to the truck race Fri. night.

Tom - here's the story:

Friday night,,Kurt was driving a car coming up to a stop sign where a couple of other cars ahead of him were coming to a stop. Kurt was either traveling too fast or didn't see the brake lights ahead,,,,so he avoided hitting the car ahead of him by darting out around and blowing the stop sign and just missed t-boning another car. A sheriff's officer seen what happened and threw on the lights. Kurt kept going with the sheriff's car behind him,,,refusing to stop and traveling 60+ in a 45 zone. The officer radioed ahead to another unit ahead who joined in the stop,,,,when Kurt stopped, he was asked for his license. Kurt gave them his license and his NASCAR license and said: Don't you know who I am?. I think that is called a bus ticket to hell, lol. The officers smelled alcohol on him, and tried to perform a field sobriety test on Kurt,,,who would quit in the middle of each test mode,,,refusing to go through it. He was belligerent with the officers calling them wimps [and worse] and that they were only qualified to direct traffic. He was taken to the Sheriff's department substation at PIR, where a breath test was going to be performed. It was reported that the equipment had a malfunctioning problem right at that exact time. Sure it did.

1. failure to stop at a stop sign
2. endangerment to other motorists
3. failure to stop for a law enforcement officer in pursuit
4. speeding
5. reckless driving
6. insulting an officer
7. refusing to take the field sobriety test
8. alcohol in blood level possibly over the limit?

Well the big guy, Sheriff Joe was called, and I believe it was pointed out that Phx. International Raceway and NASCAR >>> PAY ALL THE OVERTIME WAGES FOR THE OFFICERS used to direct traffic during the four days of the event. Most likely was mentioned that this is a multi-million dollar event for the area,,,,twice a year.

Joe Six-Pack,,,like Halicat and I,,,,would be spending the entire weekend in jail,,,I am sure

I also heard on the radio today, that Kurt did a PSA about drinking and driving Something about being responsible and let others drive when you drink. I hope he was drinking Crown Royal [#97 sponsor] before driving,,,,instead of some cheap stuff. Next year with Penske,,,,he'll be able to drink all the Miller Lite he wishes,,while driving the Miller #2

Thanks for the LOW down AC. And just think, right in your back yard. Would he have been suspended if he was 25 points behind Stewart in the Chase? I think not, but you never know. No love lost with him and the straw hat. Big news and happenings for a defending champ. BAD PRESS!! Not what Nascar needs, timed with the inclusion of hard liquor sponsors.

AC-

I listened last night on the radio to Benny Parson's description of the Kurt Busch incident and it was detailed with interviews of several witnesses at the restaurant, at the scene and at the police station. It parallels your post.

The only addition that Benny stated was that Kurt was out to dinner and was rushing back to the tract to beat the traffic leaving the truck race. Benny also said that witnesses at the scene and at the police station said that everyone was trying to give Kurt a break, but he was being such an a**, they were forced to come down on him. They said if Kurt hadn't showed himself so bad, in front of so many bystanders, he probably could have gotten away with a warning and no one would have known of it.

Randy - you are probably right. Using DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM and berating the sheriff officers as only traffic control cops,,,,,probably was the key. His 'mouth' is what got him into a situation that he was going to get a citation for. PIR is located in Avondale, Az,,,,,,and their police chief said if his patrolman would have made the stop,,,,Kurt would be in jail. It's politics that got him off lite. NASCAR spends millions here for those two races,,,but,,,,the races bring in mega millions in revenue for the area [hotels, restaurants, rental cars, airlines, employment, etc.]

For a nice smile,,,a few good words,,,and a autograph, he probably could have walked away from any attention, IMO.
