I'm there if it ever gets built. 4,000 feet straight down, what a view. Last I heard it was still in teh planning stages and they were having issues getting insurance coverage. "August 26, 2005—Fear of heights? This is definitely no place for you. "The Skywalk will be an attraction unlike any other in the world," said Sheri Yellowhawk, CEO of the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation. The company is building the bridge in the Hualapai Indian Reservation on the south rim of the canyon. The Skywalk is scheduled to open to the public in January 2006 as part of a new resort on the reservation. The resort, known as Grand Canyon West, is to include a re-created Indian village and a restaurant perched on the edge of the canyon. Tourism is the reservation's biggest source of income. Grand Canyon West will be on the western edge of Grand Canyon National Park, about 120 miles (about 200 kilometers) from Las Vegas. But perhaps not even the Las Vegas Strip's over-the-top attractions will be a match for this glass-bottom walkway over the world's biggest gorge." |

It would really be exciting if it had a glass floor! |

I hadn't heard of that -- but I checked snopes.com and it says its true! http://www.snopes.com/photos/architecture/skywalk.asp Not sure you'd get me out on that thing. I'd be having too many thoughts of structural failure and material fatigue. |

It needs a Giant sized roll of toilet paper on a toilet paper holder attached to the cliff. and a flush handle and a padded seat. This message has been edited by SirReal on 11-02-2005 at 03:54 PM |

Bob, It's supposed to have a glass bottom and handrail. So you can stand on it and look straight down to the canyon floor. |

Howdja like to be one of the builders?? What a thrill!! The bridge over Royal Gorge is 1100 feet above the Colorado River and that is quite a thrill!! I've always wanted to get on top of El Capitan in Yosemite...sheer rock 5000 feet high! |

I've taken a helicopter ride over the edge. It's a rush when you see the ground almost a mile down after just being over tree tops. I was holding on. |

Anyone ever stand at the top of the World Trade Center, on the 110th floor with their toes touching the glass? I hate heights and I went up but did not walk up to the windows. I felt a lot safer 4 feet away in case their was trouble. |

Saw it on one of the network news show a couple of months ago and thought it was a joke then too, but alas, it really is true! Wally |

It will be really interesting to see what the finished product looks like compared to the artists rendering. With the concept as just a steel beam structure cantilevered out, the foundation will have to be pretty intricate, taking into consideration not only the earthquakes, but wind shear coming up the canyon walls can set up some pretty severe harmonics. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was a great example of what damage harmonics, wind shear and resonance can do. That being said, I am still there. What a rush. Larry, We all gotta go sometime. Remember it's not the freefall that kills you, it's the landing. Fat Pat, There is a spot on El Capitan that I walked out to (actually crawled out the last 20 feet) several years ago and peered straight down the side. Admiring the spectacular scenery when I heard someone asking me to be sure and not knock anything loose. There was a guy and girl hanging from the side of the sheer mountain in nets. They were spending the night anchored there, and finishing their climb the next day! |

Ed - I'd be four feet behind you, lol. The Royal Gorge didn't bother me,,,but I felt safe on the bridge. |

quote: I was just talking with some 7th and 8th graders today for a Future City project (a 7-8th grade national competition to increase interest in engineering - a wonderful program BTW - www.futurecity.org). I asked them if they'd heard of the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Wonderful video I remember as a H.S student and in engineering college. |

I've never been, but I know lots of folks that have visited the tower in Toronto that has a glass floor... freaks people out. I don't know if I could walk on it or not... I enjoyed the glass elevator at the Westin in Atlanta... 72 floors up the outside of the building, to a rotating bar with 4 telescope landings. Very cool! Takes about a beer and a half to rotate all the way around... |

Or, how about that rollercoaster on top of that Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas? That is something I could never handle! |
