Sandy's dad Ernie, turned 78 on Friday and found out today that he has lung cancer. He has smoked heavily for years and there was nothing noticable 6 months ago. That is bad since that indicates it is a fast growing cancer.
Ironically he found out totally by accident. Last Monday her parents visited the neighbors for a drink and then were going out to celebrate the neighbor's birthday. Her mom felt bad so they left for dinner right away. When they got home, the neighbor called them and said there was smoke in the house. They could not find the problem. Ernie went down stairs and discovered the lights and dashboard lights were on in the car in the attached garage. When he told them to open the windows and door, the female neighbor passed out. They called the life squad. They took both to the hospital. Sandy's mom went with them. They found out she had been in the house for 15 or 20 minutes, earlier in the evening and tested her. She needed to be treated. They then found out Ernie was home sleeping. They went home and woke him up and treated him with oxygen for 4 hours. They listened to his lungs and did an X-ray and discovered the spot but it was not confirmed until today. Both neighbors spent the night in the hospital. Maybe it was fate.
Anyway, Sandy is very upset, to say the least. He could use some divine intervention, I am afraid. Prayers help.
Thanks

Lung cancer is very fast, but if 6 months ago nothing maybe there is a chance to remove the lung. My dad had 1/2 of one lung removed and was fine for many years after that

Our prays are with you

My thoughts & prayers are also with you Sandy.....for you, your dad and entire family.

Ed, that's quite a shocking scenerio ~ hopefully no lasting affects from that and thank goodness nothing more extreme happened.

The neighbor is 86 and he is still very sharp. His wife had some type of SERIOUS health problems about 10-15 years ago and was in a coma for months so at times she seems a little ditzy. Supposedly she came home, it was raining, she pulled into the garage to get out of the rain, went up to get her hubby to go out for lunch and he said he did not want to go. She forgot the car was running in a closed garage. Apparently the car stalled when the garage lost oxygen, it did NOT run out of gas. Sandy's mom felt ill within about 15 minutes so they left to go eat. They were lucky all 4 of them did not die. If she would not have passed out at the front door, they probably would have opened a few windows and went to bed for the night and died. That part was very lucky and so was the resulting "physical" for Sandy's dad. He has emphysema in the other lung, they also discovered.
We do not know what they intend to do as far as treatment. Her mom was a nurse, Sandy is a nurse and Sandy's twin sister is a nurse in FL at a hospice.

Sandy your Dad is in my thoughts & prayers & in my heart... I really hope he pulls through & with no pain what so ever. The main thing now is to enjoy every bit of every day & let them know that you love them. He can pull through & with the right amount of love I know you & Ed have, he will be back on his feet in no time.

I'm so sorry to hear of the diagnosis. My father (@75) passed away July 5th 2004 with lung cancer.

His choices now may be limited?

1.) Do the chemo/radiation thing.

2.) Do the Chemo/radiation thing WITH a "super dose" of chemo at the conclusion of initial treatments to hope it prevents the cancer from spreading.

3.) Do nothing

My Dad went with option #2 (with Super dose) and it killed him pretty much right away (within 10 days after the treatment) and made him feel VERY sick too.

well wishes...
