still my all time favorite Vette....

...about 30 years ago a friend of mine I saw every week had a 58 Vette....it was a seventies style custom.....gold metalflake paint, lotsa chrome, blower sticking several feet above the hood, big wheels and tires on the rear...total custom....he drove it to his part time job at a liquor store and I would stop and admire the Vette every time I saw it there, ask lotsa dumb questions, learning all I could from Jerry...he knew more about straight axle Vettes than anyone I knew back then....he even let me sit in his prized custom....I was in love with 58 Vettes from that day on....I tried to buy several different ones and they were always just a few dollars out of my reach....I finally found a 1961 with no engine that Jerry advised me on, told me what to look out for in a 15 year old Vette....he was my guru....shortly after I purchased the 61 Vette he sold the 58 Vette for $10K, settled down and got married...always wondered where the 58 went, I never saw it again and I never saw Jerry again, he quit the little part time job at the liquor store at the same time....

...funny how you lose track of friends, there is always tomorrow to catch up, too busy today....

...picked up the paper tonight and his obituary was listed, he was 58 years old, I still watch the ads for a 58 Vette all the time and always think of Jerry and the sparkling gold custom he let me sit in that sunny afternoon....maybe I will find the right one some day....

so long buddy....

Great story but a sad ending. Cats in the cradle can also include friends. Funny how we take tomorrow for granted. Sorry for your loss and hope you find that '58. Jeff

I have never owned a Vette. When I was about 12 or 13 there was an "old" guy in our neighborhood (probably younger than I am now) that drove a Vette. This guy had a grey flat top and had a son about 6 or 8 years older than me. I still vividly remember seeing him in his Vette and thinking it was the coolest car and the coolest guy in the world. I recently saw his son when I was visiting my mom in the rest home. His mother-in-law is there, also.
I don't remember the exact year but it was about a 57 or 58. Not too long after that the show Route 66 was on TV with 2 guys driving a Vette across the southwest. That also impressed me tremendously. I still never bought a Vette but those old ones are the ones that impress me.

...I have always loved Vettes and have owned about 10 of them them in the last 30 years....looking to add an older one to the fleet soon...looking at 58/62 mostly...the old ones are kinda like a Prowler, tremendous attention while driving them, decent performance but wont break your neck....they just really look KOOL going down the road...they are impractical, but still lotsa fun to drive...I had a 64 Vette coupe I drove everyday as my sales vehicle....really enjoyed that car(till I was offered a profit)

I also love the 58 - 59 Vette C1, but they are very expensive in Europe.
So I bought a 67 427cui C2 StingRay.
The C2 is one of the few US Cars in Europe, who is cheaper here then in the US.

Here is a pic of my toys:

I have always loved the '62s. Never owned one although I have owned several Corvettes. My banker collects them (I take care of the brake work on them)He has a 427/435 I wouldn't mind owning!! Sorry about your loss TUIB, I try not to let old friends fade away.

I owned a Black '59 w/Silver Coves & Red Leather Interior--4 spd, of course! Had soft + Hard Tops! Pretty close, TUIB!

TUIB - good story. 58 is too young to go...

When I was a little kid, there was a guy up the street that owned one of the very early Vettes. It was white with a red interior. He took me for a ride in his Vette and I was completely in love with that car! He also built a hot rod in his garage, that was really loud going down the street.

While I really admire the 50's Vettes, my favorite is the 63 fastback.

Local guy here bought two 25th Anniversary Vettes. Less than 10 miles on both the last time I saw them. Wonder what they are worth these days. I don't think that they have ever been titled. May still be eligible for factory warrantee. Not too sure about that tho.

78 Pace Cars are doing okay, but the Silver Anni Vettes are still a dismal investment(especially the L48)...neighbor sold one a couple of years ago for $14K....it had a very few thousand miles on it and had been on display at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green for a couple of years....beyond perfect...

another old buddy of mine is having his L82/AT Silver Anni repainted Inferno Red to match his new Jeep....he bought the 78 new and it still has only 27K miles....he is just tired of the silver and the car will never be sold, so the color change has no monetary significance to him...

As a young boy sitting in the back of Dad's car at the local Drive-In restaurant (was called the Satellite) I was always wowed by the Hot Rods that would parade in a loop around the drive-in. But it was the Vettes that always knocked my socks off. I remember asking Dad if he thought I would ever have one. He said as bad as you want one, somehow someway you will. It took about 25 years but I realized that dream with a '78 SA. The only car that I've ever owned that I never got beat in against anything that pulled up beside me. Lost money on the car but lived a dream. Money well spent! Jeff
