I'm not a Basketball fan, by any means ... but can't help but sit up and notice the hub-bub about making these millionaires dress like respectful employees of their profession....not gang bangers or hip hop stars...Is the NBA trying to clean up its act ? or just trying to gain some fans by not portraying it in a MF'n bad light.... sup wit dat ? opinions ?

I say its about time!! I'm not a basketball fan either especially the pros. I got flamed on the T Bucket board for talking about 18 millionaires on a baseball field for 3 hours scratching their nads and winding their watches...maybe there is more to baseball than I can see, but its pretty boring in my opinion.

I used to be a big baseball fan.... played ball , watched it on TV.. went to a few Tigers games.... After the strike , I never watched it again... hockey has lost a bit of its appeal to me as well.... I'd sooner watch the bantam's and peewee's play at the local rinks....

I would'nt watch a basketball game if you paid me! Use to watch baseball and go to a few Baltimore games, but I just tried to watch several of the division play-off games and never stayed awake for one game thru the 7th inning! Hockey, what's that? Now soccer, there's a REAL waste of time, let the Europeans have it! I feel much better now, turn on the Speed Channel!

I'm a NBA fan,,,,,Phx Suns,,,since 1975. Run and gun,,play no defense,,,score mega points and outlive the other team I think the new rule is a bit over board in some areas,,,but coming to and leaving the arena in a suit/sport coats, I feel is an acceptable request.

I once loved watching the NBA, I haven't cared for it much in the last 5 or more years. The game and its players are looking more and more like the street game that I can go see down at the playground for free. The NBA has allowed the street punk image for too long and they are on a sinking ship. The Punk image has filtered all the way down to middle school basketball. It's all about the "Bling" not he game! This message has been edited by Kruisin Kat on 10-22-2005 at 03:11 AM

Use to watch the NBA all the time. Lost interest about 15 years ago when the players started becoming so low class. If I had kids at home why would I want to use these guys as role models? I know very few people who even care about or watch NBA games anymore.

I'm not a basketball fan.......don't watch it, but been reading the articles in the paper about it. The one that cracked me up was the player who is making millions said that the NBA should provide a stipend if they are expected to buy new clothes.

Who are they trying to kid? Basketball players portray themselves as what they are, illiterate morons. I know there are some who are very intelligent, and I suspect they already dress appropriately.

I can't stand basketball so my opinion doesn't matter...but ...I thnk the suit coat thing is bit too far.The players should be mature enough to set their own standard? Call it the "Just look "professtional" attire (no chains or sunglasses..etc.)???

I used to love the game. For the most part the guys had enough class to look respectable. Now the dumbing down of America is hurting the NBA and the league is trying to stop the bleeding. The word that stops us in our track- RACISM has entered into the policy change. Let them wear what they want. Hey stars, you did not do to well in the last olympics. I'll stick to college if any! I look at it this way. They were pampered idiots and punks in high school and college, did not have to go to classes, graduated (a few anyway), signed with the pros so now they are MILLIONAIRE pampered idiots and punks. I have never seen an NBA game in my life, including on TV. I have attended some Final Fours but even college BB is getting pathetic. Everyone of them palm the ball and travel on almost every drive. If they had to play by the rules instead of the street rules they would not be stars.

Have never understood why any adult should be paid to play a child's sport. Most professional sports are full of spoiled adults that never grew up. They sure don't set the proper example for our young kids to follow into adulthood. Drugs, steroids, gambling, sex parties, and point shaving, great examples of Professional athletics.

One thing I have to argee with Ed on, is that they always palm the ball and travel on every play. What's up with that.

Ed & Kraut-The news out of the ACC Basketball Kickoff Weekend is that the officatiing in the ACC and with many leagues is to concentrate on palming and the crossover dribble (carry) this year. Time will tell. I am a big basketball fan, but the NBA has lost me. I may catch a Charlotte game this year, but I won't go out of my way to see them. I love the college game though. I go to 1 or 2 games a week during the season. Wake Forest, NC State, Duke and Carolina are all within an hour drive. I go each year to the ACC and Sothern Conference Tournaments and at least one regional. Yes the college players are pampered, but not as gangsta or hip-hop as the NBA. I love the High School and youth games. I really enjoy my involvment with a High School holday tournament we have here.

Randy- I agree with you about college basketball being more appealling than NBA. As far as the "palming" the ball goes, if they enforce it there won't be a guard in the country that doesn't double their turnover rate per game!Louisville's first game (exhibition) is next week - Wed. Nov 2nd!!!! Nothing like joining 19,000 of our best friends at Freedom Hall and watch a little round ball!

Sorry.I got so fired up about basketball that I didn't answer the initial question! I guess I'm "Old School" and come from the days when proper bench attire was not a question. In my college days you worked for extra cash, asked for cash for Christmas and birthdays so you would have money to buy the best clothes for game day. Sport coats with ties were OK to travel in, but if on the bench at the game, classy suits were the unwritten rule. NCAA, conferences, schools and coaches didn't have to tell you that. Upperclassmen kept freshmen/sophomores/transfers straight. Hell yes they should dress appropriately, but Stern should not have had to do it. The team leaders should do it and if not they, the owners and/or coaches. Whether you like Jordan or not, he required the Washington Wizards to wear suits on game day while he was a part owner. I saw this first hand when they came here for an exhibition game. My son was a lockerroom attendant and ballboy for the game. ALL Wizard players, coaches and managers had on suits as they stepped off the bus. Patrick Ewing told my son Micheal asked all to follow the dress code and no one questioned it.

Great post Randy.... simply said its about respect.... If you guys have ever noticed ... the NHL players get off the bus... they are all wearing suits.... even our local minor hockey travel teams must wear white shirt and tie to all the games starting in Bantam division ( 14-15 year olds)... its great to see... come on NBA ! make those guys dress like they are professionals.. they are paid like it !

i'd pick amateur sports anyday over pro sportsi have more respect for football than basketball , baseball or hockey.fo0otball teams practicve for a week preparing for a game. the other three have practices on aq daily basis they call games and get people to pay money to watch them play one of their 180 "games" for the year.
