Famous "Batman" Mansion Goes Up In Flames
Authorities today investigated two fires in Pasadena, including one that officials said destroyed a mansion that has been used in several films and television shows.

The mansion fire at 160 South San Rafael Avenue, just south of the Foothill (210) Freeway, was reported around 9:20 p.m. yesterday, said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.
More than 80 firefighters were dispatched to the site, but the mansion -- used in several "Batman" movies as well as many other films and television shows -- was a "total loss," she said.

A police helicopter crew assisted firefighters by circling over the burning mansion, watching for stray embers that could have ignited the heavy brush nearby, Derderian said.

Additional fire crews were stationed in Lower Arroyo Park, behind the residence, to prevent brush fires, Derderian said. The precaution coincided with strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity -- what the National Weather Service calls Red Flag conditions.

Neighbors speculated that ongoing construction at the mansion may have sparked the blaze, Derderian said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

About six miles away, a fire broke out around 11 last night at a house in the 200 block of Montana Street, Derderian said.

The family living in the home escaped safely before the arrival of firefighters, who knocked down the blaze in about an hour, she said, adding that one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters from the Glendale, Arcadia and Los Angeles County fire departments assisted in extinguishing the second fire, Derderian said.

This report is not accurate. The Batman house is safe and sound. The mansion that burned was down the street and was used in a Rocky film. The Batman house is now owned by Paul McCartney.

The Batman car was at Cruisin for a Cure this year too.

Fire Wednesday night, Oct. 5, 2005 guts a Pasadena, Calif., mansion where many movies and television shows were filmed. The Tudor style mansion served as the home of Bruce Wayne in the 1960s "Batman" television series and the 1991 movie "Dead Again." The home in the city's Arroyo district was 16,000 square feet and sat on five acres of land. A fire official says it was being remodeled by the owners when fire broke out. (AP Photo/Brian Deitchler)
