1940s
The “American Pie” guy, Don McLean, is born. 1945

1950s
Mike Rutherford, guitarist for Genesis and Mike & the Mechanics, has a birthday. 1950

Gordon Matthew Sumner is born. Due to a fondness for a black and yellow stripped jersey he acquires the name Sting. 1951

1960s The Who makes their U.S. TV debut on "Shindig" and perform “My Generation.” Also, Garage Rock arrives. “Hang On Sloopy” by the McCoys tops the U.S. charts. 1965

All six Grateful Dead members are busted in San Francisco for possession of marijuana. Later in the day they are released on bail. 1967

1970s
A good day for Rod Stewart. His single “Maggie May” tops the charts and “Every Picture Tells A Story” is #1 on the album charts. Meanwhile, John Lennon’s “Imagine” LP enters the charts. Also, landing on the charts is the Beach Boys’ “Surf’s Up.” 1971

A bomb scare cancels a Bruce Springsteen concert in Milwaukee. The show is re-scheduled for midnight. Meanwhile Springsteen has a few drinks at the hotel and rides on the hood of a car back to the concert hall. A journalist writes “I have seen the future of Rock & Roll and he’s on my windshield.” 1975

Each member of KISS releases a solo album. Despite guitarist Ace Frehley`s hit “Back In The New York Groove,” bassist Gene Simmons does the best of the lot and earns a gold record. Also, the bodies of Elvis Presley and his grandmother are moved to Graceland. A month earlier it appeared someone tried to steal Elvis’ body from Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. That’s just plan sick. 1977

1980s
Busy day. Bruce Springsteen’s acoustic “Nebraska” album enters the charts. There are no hits but it cements Springsteen’s reputation as an important songwriter. John Cougar’s mini-epic about “two American kids living in the heartland,” “Jack & Diane” is #1. Rush’s “Signals” enters the LP charts. In addition, The Clash’s humorous blast “Rock The Casbah” hits the singles charts. And at a benefit concert in England, current members of Genesis (Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks) are joined by past members Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel. Finally, Aerosmith limps along as “Rock In A Hard Place” enters the album charts for a brief stay. Guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford are absent. 1982

Bruce Springsteen wraps up his highly successful “Born In The U.S.A.” tour in L.A. 1985

2000s
Ex-Hole leader and actress Courtney Love has a rough night. She is arrested for possession of illegal drugs after trying to break into a L.A. house. Later in the evening, after posting bail, the widow Cobain is rushed to the hospital suffering from a drug overdose. 2003

After much debate and a postponement, the Melbourne City Council names a street after AC/DC. The street, more like an alley, was known as Corporation Lane. It is now the charming AC/DC Lane. Also, The Used launch a North American tour in Tucson to support their “In Love and Death” CD. Lastly, there`s a tribute concert honoring late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham and his brother Michael in Surrey, England. “A Night for Bonzos” includes performances by ex-Who/Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones and founding Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden. Guitars signed by Jimmy Page and Kiss are auctioned during the benefit event to raise money for the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre and the Jones-founded Small Faces Charitable Trust. 2004

The simultaneous release of all 4 KISS solo albums was the largest release in history...4 million albums. The KISS marketing machine had a field day, accurately proclaiming, "Each solo album shipped platinum".

Problem is, the market really wasn't ready for this many records by these guys, and many, many copies were returned to the recond company and ultimately ended up in cut-out bins around the country.

Last year Gene Simmons released another solo album called "A**hole", which did reasonably well thanks to his cover of the Prodigy song "Firestarter". Later this year Paul Stanley will release his solo album, and a KISS concert DVD is scheduled for a December release.

Personally, I'm saving up for the KISS Kasket.......
