I didn't even know that he was ailing. Apparentely 4 months ago he announced he was receiving treatments for lung cancer. He never appeared on air again. I remember watching him broadcast the 9/11 aftermath. I liked him much better than many other newscasters.

This is sad. He was an excellent journalist.

RIP, Peter.

There was a 2 hour broadcast this past Wednesday evening produced by ABC news in honor of Peter. It was (to say the least) an act of love and respect. I set the VCR & captured all of it. Beautifully done. As a final segment on ABC World News Tonight, they had an additional tribute to him every night this week & I wish I could have recorded those.

He was in a league by himself. No ego, no agenda, no bias, no slanted editorials, no arrogance (that alone separates him from the rest), the quitessential "everyman". We trusted him. I can't think of a journalist who comes close, past or present.

He was a fixed part of our nightly routine, every night, for years.

To say he was held in extremely high regard by his peers, his co-workers, is a gross understatement. I truly believe (whether he liked it or not), he was the conscience of the newsroom.

As soon as I can figure out how to transfer that VHS to a DVD, the better I'll feel. Then, in the future, when I wonder what ever happened to quality broadcast journalism, I'll replay it.

We have been blessed. The likes of Peter Jennings are not likely to pass this way again. What a legacy he's left. Not bad for a Canadian kid who never finished High School.
