In 1972 KR (who was arguably the greatest rider that ever lived)was getting his butt kicked on his OW72 Yamaha by the HDs. He was running lots of 2nds and thirds, only because of his riding ability, so he was still "in the hunt" for the National Title. Indy was going to be the deciding factor as to who was going to win the National #1 Plate. Kenny had the boyz at Yamaha build a dirt tracker and install the 4 cylinder 2 stroke Road Race Engine in it making around 160 HP @ an unbelievable 12,000 RPM. It had to be the most wicked handling monstrosity ever. Kenny rode that thing in the marbles up high on the track sideways most of the time and screaming along turning 11-13,000 RPM and throwing a 50' rooster tail....IT WAS A THING OF BEAUTY!
He kicked everybody's butt and lapped several. 4 days later the AMA banned all multi cylinder motorcycles from dirt track competition. It put the 3 cylinder BSA's and Triumphs out to pasture at the same time. King Kenny was the ONLY rider in the world that could have done it. I was there and believe me, it was history in the making!!
